Is Chucking and Noise Normal When Towing a Gooseneck Trailer
Question:
I have a 2012 chevy Silverado 3500 DRW. I have noticed the hitch or ball making noise during stops and starts. I just had a new ball installed thinking this would fix the problem. Is it normal for the slight movement during stops and starts. I have a new big tex 25GN and have taken my truck in to have the new ball installed, they also tightened every nut and bolt they could find on the mounting under the bed.

What you are describing sounds like chucking. The trailer coupler on your gooseneck trailer has to be able to rotate around the ball. Because of this there is some space allowing it to move freely around the ball when you turn. This also leaves space for the noise and movement you are describing; known as chucking. It is normal unless it is very excessive. If it is slight and only happens during acceleration and braking events, then it is normal behavior.
There is also the chance, though not very likely, that the coupler on the trailer is meant for a larger ball than what is on the hitch. Check the coupler to determine if it takes a 3 inch ball or a 2-5/16 inch ball. Also make sure that the coupler is fully secured around the ball before locking it into place.
You can reduce some of the chucking by using a cushioned coupler like # CG which fits inside an outer tube with a 4 inch inner diameter.
