Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector to a 2006 Ford F-150 with a Factory 4-Way Flat Connector
Updated 07/11/2013 | Published 07/10/2013 >
Question:
I would like to install this on my 2006 ford F150. The truck comes pre wired with a 4 pin plug. Will my plug work with this system or is there an adapter available for it to plug in to. Thanks for your help.

The 7-Way connector # HM40975 is designed as a replacement for an OEM 7-Way on a 2006 Ford F-150. What you will need is # 37185 and do a little hardwiring.
What you will do is follow the factory 4-Way forward on the vehicle where it plugs into another connector along the driver side frame rail. This connector has more wires going into it than coming out to the 4-Way side. If you peel back the covering on the forward connector you will find some additional wires.
There should be an orange wire that you will connect to the 37185 black wire. And there should be a blue wire that will connect to the 37185 blue wire. The white wire on the 37185 will ground to the truck frame. And the final wire can connect to a reverse light wire if you need it. Otherwise it can be taped up and stowed out of the way.
I have included a link to an FAQ article that will help. You need the section titled Connecting the 6 or 7-Way Plug.
