Question:

Looking at a trailer hitch receiver for a 2021 VW ID 4, I see a Curt and Draw-Tite. What is the difference in installation? It seems like the hard part is taking the bumper off. Is this necessary for both brands? Thank you!

I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # DT84GR as being the best receiver for your 2021 Volkswagen ID 4. It will be easier to install as you do not have to fully remove the bumper beam on your ID 4 like is required with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C47JR. I also like the Draw-Tite receiver added the extra steel to the arms that connect the receiver to the cross tube. This will be much better at resisting any deflection of the receiver tube on your ID 4.

Both receivers will require you to remove the bumper cover and several trim panels as well. I have linked both sets of installation instructions below so you can see the full installation process.

The Vehicle Wiring Harness # C59236 will give you everything that you need to install a 4-way flat connector on your ID 4. This will be needed for towing small trailers as well as adding Auxiliary Lights # C53201 to any hitch mounted accessory that impairs the view of your taillights.
