Question:
Hi, I have a 2010 Tacoma SR5 with a tow package of 6500lbs. Why can I only find hitches for my truck that are rated for 5000lbs? What hitch with a 6500lb rating would fit my truck. I am replacing my current rusted hitch. Thank you! Angie

From what I have found, there are no hitches made for the 2010 Toyota Tacoma that will match the 6,500 lb towing capacity your truck has with the tow package. I also looked at the Toyota factory hitch, which is rated for 5,000 lbs. This is not typical, but does happen occasionally where even the factory hitch does not match the vehicle capabilities. As for aftermarket, it is hard to say. It is likely due to the necessary design for a bolt on hitch that will fit the vehicle, or a lack of demand.
This leaves you with two options. One is to choose a custom fit hitch like the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98850. This hitch has a maximum gross trailer weight of 5,000 lbs, or 5,500 lbs when used with weight distribution. This is a Class III hitch and features a matte black powder coat finish.
Your other option would be to go with something like the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Service Body Trailer Hitch Receiver # 41990-07. This is a Class V weld-on hitch typically used for commercial vehicles. Since you will need to take this to a professional to have it installed, I recommend speaking to them first to make sure there are no issues installing this on your Tacoma. It has a gross trailer weight of 16,000 lbs which will allow you to utilize the full 6,500 lb towing capacity of your vehicle. It is important to note that 6,500 lbs will still be the most you can tow.
