Updated 09/30/2021 | Published 09/29/2021

Question:

Im trying to figure out load axle can carry from an old camper. Housing measures 2 3/8 across. Inside backing plate to plate is 47 1/4 . Springs are 26 1/4 hole to hole and 13 5/8 hole to center. Spring is 4 leaf. Hub is 4 bolt 6 3/4inch center bolt to bolt. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Helpful Expert Reply:

With you having a Dexter 8-147 hub, you will have a 3,500 pound capacity axle. The measurement you got with the lug bolts means you most likely also have their Vintage 4 on 9.4 bolt pattern, but with even wheels you need to measure center to center of bolts directly across from each other.

However, the 8-147 hub is no longer being produced. They can still be found, but it is not going to be an easy process. What may be easier will be to replace the hubs with something much more common, like the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 3,500-lb Axles - 10" Diameter # AKHD-545-35-K, which uses the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern.
