To flat tow your 2010 GMC Acadia you'll want to review the "Recreational Vehicle Towing" and follow the steps listed to get your vehicle prepared to tow. If your Acadia is front wheel drive you'll be able to pull it from the front with all four wheels on the ground or with the front wheels on a tow dolly. If your Acadia is all wheel drive then you'll be able to tow with all four wheels on the ground but will not be able to tow using a tow dolly. You'll need to run your vehicle at the beginning of each day and at each RV fuel stop for about five minutes. This will ensure proper lubrication of transmission components.
To flat tow you'll need a tow bar, base plate, tow bar wiring, braking system, and safety cables. I have the following recommendations for you below:
Tow Bar: Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-522. The non-binding design allows you to release your vehicle at any time, anywhere on even or unlevel ground and the large hookup radius makes connecting a breeze at any angle, even if your vehicle isn't perfectly lined up with your RV.
Base Plate: Roadmaster EZ Crossbar Style Base Plate Kit # 523149-1. The twistlock drawbars are easily removable, just twist and pull, and provide a clean look when not in use. You'll also need the Replacement Quick Disconnect Crossbar Assembly for Roadmaster Motorhome Mounted Tow Bars # 910021-00 to connect to the direct connect brackets of the # RM-522.
Tow Bar Wiring: Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This diode kit allows you to use your GMC Acadia's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from your RV. The included 7-wire to 6-wire Flexo-Coil electrical cord is resistant to water, oil, chemicals, and has silicone-injected plugs to prevent corrosion.
Braking System: Brake Buddy Select 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System - Proportional # HM39524. This braking system offers intense, emergency braking or steady, smooth braking in a single portable system. Easily switch between proportional or full braking using the remote from your RV.
Safety Cables: RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables - 6,000lbs # RM-643. The coiled design will help prevent the cables from dragging and becoming damaged.
You'll need to pull the BATT1 fuse located in the engine compartment fuse block. You can use the Roadmaster FuseMaster Fuse Bypass Switch for Towed Vehicles - 50-Amp FMX Fuse # RM-76517 to switch the fuse off without having to physically pull it.
You'll also have to pull the ECM fuse located in the engine compartment fuse block. You can use the Roadmaster FuseMaster Fuse Bypass - 13" - 20-Amp Mini-Fuse # RM76511 to switch the fuse off without having to physically pull it. - This fuse is to be pulled per GM tech bulletin dated 9/5/12.
You may also require a high/low hitch adapter to keep your tow bar level while you tow your Acadia. I've attached our help guide article which will walk you through the steps of determining the correct adapter for your needs.
