Wheel Bearings Too Small to Fit 1.06 Inch Diameter Spindle

Updated 10/20/2025 | Published 08/28/2021

Question:

I am trying to put a new hub and bearings kit on my trailer axle. It seems the shaft is bigger than the inside of the bearing. Shaft seems to be 1 inch and a sixteenth and the bearing is 1 inch. Is 1 1/16 a real size? Needless to say the bearing won’t easily slide on.

Looks like you have a straight spindle that's typically found on a 2K rated axle.

There are two bearing sizes that are really close, the L44649 has an inside diameter of 1.063 while the L44643 has an inside diameter of 1.00 inches, so I'm guessing you have the wrong bearings.

The good news is that your existing hubs use the same L44610 races regardless of which bearing set is needed, so you can simply replace your existing bearings with 4 of the # L44649 bearings, or if you want the bearing kit which includes the races, grease seal and a cotter pin, use # BK1-150.

Mike, I’ve just spent the last seven hours removing the inside bearing that was stuck on the spindle, then buying the new bearings and trying to install them which they wouldn’t fit. I thought they were one inch. I couldn’t find anything on the Internet that would tell me what was up until I came across your answer, Saving my sanity. The guys at the auto parts store didn’t have any answers for me. Four years ago, I started working on my own cars and trailers and dirt bikes to save money. This is the first time I’ve worked on trailer axles hubs bearings. I didn’t really know what I was doing, although it’s not that complicated. The slightly too small bearings really threw me off though. So once again, thank you for the information to solve this problem for me. Greatly appreciated.
