Can Trailer Wiring Be Used When Flat Towing a Vehicle

Updated 03/02/2026 | Published 08/15/2021

Question:

Hi I ordered a 55372 harness for a 2002 ZR2 Tracker, I found the 6 pin lug and plugged in harness. I only get marker lights, no brakes, or signal lights. I am using this a flat towed vehicle behind RV Thanks

The problem you are having is because the Curt 4-way kit part # C55372 is not for flat towing and is instead for towing a trailer which basically works in the opposite direction as what you are wanting. This kit is designed to control the taillights of a trailer connected to the vehicle whereas tow bar wiring is designed for receiving voltage instead of sending it.

We don't have anything custom fit for your vehicle but the diode kits will work well.

For lighting you can use the diode kit, # RM-15267, and not have to worry about cutting into the taillight housing. This will splice into your taillight wiring to allow your tow vehicle to control the taillight assemblies of the towed vehicle. This comes with a round 6-way connector that you will install on the front of your towed vehicle and enough coiled wire to go from there to the RV.

Hello, I already have flat tow wiring in place with my 2021 wrangler, but wanted to add a trailing setup. Being that my flat tow wiring is already using the light sockets, is there something out there to also make a connection for trailer wiring setup? Thanks Jeff

@Jeff You can use the part # 56407 which also plugs inline with taillight connectors. It would work just fine with your T-style tow bar lighting you have now as well.
