Question:

2 part question here. I have a 2017 Jayco 32BDSW that has a GVWR of 9000# and a tongue weight of 850#. What are the minimum weight axles I should have. Currently I have two 3.5Ks with 10inch 6 on 5.5inch hubs. Yesterday I had the inner part of one of the hubs and inner bearing crack and disintegrate. Even minus the 850# tongue weight there is still 8150#s the two 3500# axles need to support. Question #1. Are they the wrong axels installed? Question #2. Is there an upgrade kit higher rated hub that will fit my current spindles? Thanks for any and all help!

On your 2017 Jayco Jay Flight 32BDSW with a GVWR rating of 9000lbs I would think it should come with axles rated 4400lbs or more each to accommodate the GVWR of the trailer.

Trailer manufacturers sometimes uses axles that appear underrated, but keep in mind that tongue weight does not fall on the weight of the trailer.

In your case the 850lb tongue weight mentioned is the dry tongue weight, not when it is loaded. Tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the trailer weight which should be 900-1350lbs. Since your unloaded tongue weight is around 12% of the unloaded trailer weight I would imagine you would be in the 1200lb range tongue weight.

With that said that would still put you 800lbs overrated for the 3500lb axles installed. How did you determine the axle ratings on your trailer? Is 3500lb stamped on the axle tag on the center of each axle? 3500lb axles are incorrect for your trailer based on its GVWR.

If your trailer does have 3500lb axles then higher rated hubs will not fit as the bearing combination will not be the same. 3500lb axles typically use inner bearing # L68149 and outer bearing # L44649 where higher rated hubs uses a variety of different bearing combinations.

The only way to fix this would be by replacing the axles with ones that have a higher rating. If you bought the trailer new and the 3500lb axles came on it then I recommend reaching out to Jayco to get the issue resolved.

If someone changed the axles at some point in time and used underrated axles then you will need to measure your current axles hub face to hub face, and spring center to spring center.

For example the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with E-Z Lube Spindles - 86-1/2" Long - 5,200 lbs # 8327816 has a hub face to hub face measurement of 86-1/2" and a spring center to spring center measurement of 71-1/2" as shown in the included diagram.

If this matches your current axles dimensions this would be a great replacement option. You would also need brake assemblies # AKEBRK-7-D, hub and drum assemblies # K08-201-98, and new U-bolt kits # APUBR-8.
