Do I Get A Receiver With an Exposed Cross Tube Or Hidden On My 2018 Ford Edge SEL?

Hello, I was looking at installing either a visible bar or hidden type III trailer hitch on my 2018 Ford Edge SEL. With the hidden hitches it looks like I will need to remove the heat shield and leave that off the vehicle. Living on a gravel road I get gravel built up under the vehicle. We get significant amounts of snow and ice during the winter and that also builds up under the vehicle. If I need to remove the heat shield, is the the cavity that it protects going to build up with gravel, snow and ice? Is there a way I can reattach the heat shield or would I be better off going with a hitch with a visible bar? Thank you for your time and help!

With the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75234 having the hidden cross tube receiver, it will require the removal of the center panel with the heat shields attached on your 2018 Ford Edge. There is no major concerns with the gravel being stuck up there as it will still be able to fall out. You may run into issues during the snow and ice as it can collect in that area and with salt would cause the rust to develop more quickly if not cleaned out frequently.
The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75214 has an exposed cross tube and does not require you to remove the plastic panel with heat shields. You will be less likely to have snow and ice collect on this receiver and if it does you will be able to see that and clean it off as needed.
It really becomes mostly an appearance and the deciding factor is are you okay with seeing the cross bar of the receiver or not.
For trailer towing a Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118669 will give you a 4-way flat connector commonly found on most small trailers. With the Draw-Tite # 75214 exposed cross tube a Mounting Bracket # 18144 can be used to secure the 4-way where it can be easily accessed.
The etrailer Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches # 989900 will provide you with both a 2" and 1-7/8" ball and 2 different ball mounts to better level your trailer. The components are neatly stored in the included carry bag so that you do not misplace your ball mounts.
