What Hitch and Wiring Harness Do I Need for Towing an 8000 Pound Camper on a 2007 Chevy Express Van?

Question:
I have a 2007 Chevy express 2500hd. I’m looking at pulling about an 8000 pound camper with it. It doesn’t have a hitch or wiring so I’m wondering what hitch you guys recommend and also the wiring for trailer light and a trailer brake system.

For towing an 8000-pound camper on your 2007 Chevy Express 2500HD, I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Matte Black Finish - Class IV - 2" # e98861. The etrailer hitch has a gross trailer capacity of 10,000 pounds and a maximum tongue capacity of 1,000 pounds.
Since you have a 2007 Chevy Express without a towing package, the only plug and play option we carry is a 4-pole connector, but you can convert it to a 7-way. For this route, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118392. This wiring harness provides a connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. In addition to the 4-way, you will need the converter # ETBC7 in order to use it with a 7-way connection if your trailer is equipped with electric brakes.
For a brake controller, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 3 Axles - Proportional # RED44FR. The wiring harness of the Redard Tow-Pro Elite hardwires into your vehicle's wiring and then plugs directly into the main unit. The controller also includes active calibration technology that continuously monitors your direction of travel and adjusts brake response accordingly.
