Question:

I have a sure Trac 6 by 12 trailer with a 3500 pound axle I would like to put brakes on. The axle is Lippart components s/n S001996934 and part # ST2745. Im wondering if you can send me a link to the brakes I need. Thanks

When adding brakes to a trailer the first thing you will need is to determine if there is a brake mounting flange on the axle. If you do not have a brake flange I recommend part # 4-35. This should be welded in place by a professional welder because it needs to be square and concentric.

For the brakes I recommend using the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3,500 lbs # AKEBRK-35-SA, which are self adjusting brakes that will be something you can install and not worry about making adjustments periodically. This is a nice and convenient solution that I really prefer over manual adjusting brakes.

You're also going to need to add new wiring and a 7 way plug so that your brakes can be controlled by the brake controller. For the wire you'll want to use 12 gauge wiring # 12-1-1, which is sold by the foot. Then, you can use the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector # HS381-9000 to add a 7 way trailer connector to the trailer; you'll just cut off your 4 way and add those wires into the junction box with the wiring from the brakes and you're ready to go.

If you don't already have a trailer brake controller, you will need one of those for your vehicle to control the trailer brakes. I recommend using the Tekonsha P3 # 90195, which provides proportional braking for your trailer and gives you a nice, easy to use controller with an easy to read LCD screen.
