Question:

I went to an auto parts store, asked for an exact fit product and bought a Curt T-connector, #55381. We bought the truck used, I do not believe we had a towing package as there is no sign that we have one. I was not asked if we had the wiring for the towing package. I went to install the T connector and their is no compatiable plug on the drivers side bumper area and the drivers side tail light is not compatiable. I looked on this sight and it indicates that if we do not have the towing package wiring we need to use item # 118390. If our truck is not wired for the towing harness do I have to run a separate power wire to the vehicle battery or do they make a direct alternative for my truck? Thanks.

It does not sound like your 2005 Dodge Durango has a factory tow package if you cannot find the plugs for the harness. But to be sure you can always have a Dodge dealer run the VIN through their system to see how the vehicle is equipped.

Without the factory tow package you would use wiring harness # 118390. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view and a video showing a typical installation. This harness does connect in line with the tail light wiring. You would need to run a wire directly to the vehicle battery with this harness. This is what actually powers the trailer lights and protects the vehicle electronics at the same time.

Routing the power wire is not as difficult as you might think, it is just time consuming. I have included a link to an FAQ article with some tips on routing the power wire.
