Question:
Good afternoon, I have a 2016 Toyota Tundra with the factory electronic brake controller. It does not work most of the time and I would like to replace it with an aftermarket solution. Is it possible to remove the factory controller and replace it in the factory location? What controller and harness do you recommend? Have other customers had a similar issue? Thank you in advance for your time.

We don't offer an aftermarket controller that's specifically designed to fit in the footprint of the OEM controller, but do do offer a nice solution that wouldn't require installing a box on the underside of the dash, which it sounds like you're wanting to avoid. You could remove the OEM controller, but you'd need to get a replacement panel from your Toyota dealer to replace the hole in the dash where the controller was located. You could also simply disconnect it and leave it in place if you wish.
I'd recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty, part # RED24FR and the vehicle specific wiring harness, part
# RED99FR. In order to install the controller, you'll need to unplug the connector from the rear of the OEM brake controller and plug that into the # RED99FR harness. I'll link a video that shows how to access the connector.
The operating knob for the controller is the only portion of the unit that would be visible, you can install it just about anywhere that's within reach of the driver, although an unused switch knockout on the dash is a perfect spot.
Once you unplug the existing factory controller, you will get a warning message on the driver's info center on the dash. You will need to get your vehicle computer re-flashed at the dealer.
I've also linked to a video showing the Tow-Pro Liberty being installed on a newer 4Runner model.
