Question:
What is the width of the hitch for a 2005 Toyota Tacoma between the frame rails? My rails are 37 and quarter wide

Expert Reply:
There are three trailer hitch receivers that are fits for a 2005 Toyota Tacoma, and according to the manufacturers, from outside-to-outside at the widest points the hitches were approximately 38-1/2 inches wide. That would be the part of the hitch that attaches to the outside of the frame rail, but as you can see from the cut out of the installation instructions, there is a flange on the inside which is about 1/2 inch from the sides.
I believe this may be what you were referring to by the width "between the frame rails." All three of these trailer hitches are confirmed fits by the manufacturer for a 2005 Toyota Tacoma and we have had numerous customers install them on their 2005 Tacoma as well, and I've added a cut out from the review page as an example. The three hitches that fit your 2005 Toyota Tacoma are the following:
- etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98850
- Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13323
- Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75236
These are all essentially the same hitch with the same install and capacities so I recommend going with the least expensive option for your truck. Additionally, if you also need trailer wiring the correct part is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118496.
I have added links below to some video installs on similar model year Tacomas for you to check out as well if you'd like.
