The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 will work on your 2001 Toyota 4Runner. Since your 4Runner did not come installed with a factory 7-way connector you will need one to complete the install.
If you do not have a 4-way connector installed on your vehicle I recommend the Tekonsha T-One 4-way connector # 118341 which will plug in to the factory harness of your 4Runner and will only require you to run a power wire to the battery of your vehicle to keep your factory harness from being overloaded.
Next you will need to install the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 which will plug into your 4-way connector, and give you the additional wires needed to use the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. You will need to install the white wire from the # ETBC7 to your vehicles frame, and run the blue wire inside of the cab of your 4Runner to plug in to your trailer brake controller harness.
You can now mount the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 and connect the blue wire from the controller harness to the blue wire from your # ETBC7. Connect the white wire from your controller harness to the negative post of your battery. The black wire from your controller harness needs to go to the positive post of your battery with a 20-amp circuit breaker installed that is included with the # ETBC7. Using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 you will need to find the wire coming from your stop light switch on the back of your brake pedal that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed, tap into it and connect it to the red wire from your controller harness.
I included videos for the Tekonsha T-One # 118341, the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7, the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 and a helpful article that goes over installing a trailer brake controller from scratch.
