Using Double Lip Seals in Place of Single Lip when Using bearing Buddies

Updated 11/30/2012 | Published 11/26/2012

Question:

My Dexter hubs on my 2000 lb. axle use 10-9 model single lip grease seals. These hubs use L44649 inner and outer bearings with an L44610 race. Do you know if this 10-9 single-lip grease seal will be sufficient to withstand the 3 PSI exerted by Bearing Buddies? Or will I need to upgrade the seal in order to safely use Bearing Buddies? If I do need to upgrade the seal, do you know if I may simply replace the 10-9 single lip with a 10-60 double lip seal? Or would I be required to use a neoprene style seal? Thank you!

Expert Reply:

We will need to use a double lip seal when using Bearing Buddies or a similar product. A single lip seal cannot withstand the pressure and you will have a blowout. For a pair of double lip seals use # RG06-020. These are the same size as your 10-9 seals except they are double lip and not single lip.
