Recommendation for Crossbars Compatible with Malone J-Load Kayak Carrier on 2020 Volvo XC40

I use the malone kayak assist with their J-hooks 2 kayaks on their crossbar of 50inch square on Subaru Forester and am looking at a Volvo CX-40 2020. What crossbar and foot will I need to be able to continue using the Malone kayak assist j-hooks? Will the Malone kayak assist j-hooks fit on the Volvo crossbar? I had trouble with the j-hooks on the Thule Aerobar - both could not open properly and had to buy the Malone crossbars. Thanks

Since you had trouble with the Thule Aero style bars previously I recommend sticking with the square bar set up you have been using. We have two options of square bars that will fit the 2020 Volvo XC40 and are compatible with the Malone DownLoader Kayak Carrier # MPG114MD.
The first is the Thule SquareBar Evo Crossbars 47" Long # TH712200, with the Evo Flush Rail Feet # TH710601, and the Fit Kit for your Volvo XC40 # TH186010. This is going to be the most economic option we have available in square bar, but they are 47" crossbars instead of the 50" you are currently using.
The second is the Yakima HD Crossbars 55" Long # Y01156, with the RidgeLine Towers # Y00145, the HD Bar SL Adapter for Yakima RidgeLine Towers # Y03541, and the RidgeClip Fit Kit # Y06030 for your XC40. This option gives your 55" of crossbar which is more than you currently use, but could be helpful if you want to include additional items on the roof. The Yakima HD bars also include a T-Track design that make it compatible with a large variety of other accessories.
