Question:

Ive been going through the QandAs and Im still confused on the D-192 and the statement that it cuts the towing capacity in half. What we have: - D-192 - articulating Max Coupler - unknown ball/ coupler mount - 2015 4Runner - 1400# loaded trailer, unknown tongue weight Accessory receiver has: - NorthShore 4 bike rack - 50# - 2 bikes that weight a total of 60# With this setup, we are able to leave the bike rack on the receiver as we hook/ unhook the trailer which is a great time saver. You mention that the D-192 cuts the towing capacity in half, what does that really mean in terms of our setup? Ive seen some comments say the tongue weight is halved...is that the vehicles tongue weight or the max capacity of the receiver? This is the part that we are really confused about. Should we change our setup, if so what would you suggest? Oddly the Curt website on a similar model doesnt mention anything about the towing capacity being reduced. Everything has been towing great but its been on our mind since we bought the D-192 from etrailer a few years ago and figured wed look into it again.

The Curt Dual Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches # D-192 is an extender and adapter, and like others does in fact reduce the total capacity of your trailer hitch in half, which also includes the tongue weight capacity.

So let's say your 2015 Toyota 4Runner's trailer hitch has a 5,000 lb towing capacity and 500 lb tongue weight rating. When using the Curt Dual Hitch Extender # D-192 your towing capacity is cut to 2,500 lbs and your tongue weight capacity is 250 lbs.

You will need to find out your tongue weight when loaded with a scale like # # e99044, and if your capacity is too low with your current adapter, I do recommend the Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount with 2" Receiver # D210.

When using this ball mount, if you are towing and using your bike rack at the same time, tongue weight and towing capacity is NOT affected. This ball mount will use either 2" Hitch Ball # 63845 or 1-7/8" Hitch Ball # 19260.
