For your 2004 Chevy Avalanche a couple "unofficial" tailgate assist options. For a shock dampener like you asked about the DeeZee part # DZ43102 will work great. Or for something to make raising and lower the tailgate much easier we have the Hopkins # 74211 which we know works too.
