Question:

Im looking for a recommendation for an enclosed trailer camera. I dont have a truck or trailer that is pre wired for anything. I have a 7foot clear height x 16 foot long trailer for ATVs and mostly motorcycles and want to be able to see inside during travel and get live feedback. I would like at least one camera in the front of trailer, but have been having thoughts of perhaps another one at the rear too since it is 16foot long. I was told to look at the Furrion system, but I mostly see people using that on RVs. Need some advice, please tell me what you would install if it was your trailer. I like the idea of being wireless from the truck to the trailer, I can provide power in the trailer to the cameras if they require it. A recommendation and what other items you would recommend for the install. At this point I have a 7 pin trailer and truck plug, but the live wire is not hooked up, I need to figure that out too for a 04 dodge ram. Thanks, Jesse

Actually, the # FOS05TASF Furrion Vision S Wireless Camera System you'd looked at is exactly what I'd recommend.

The system has plenty of wireless range, and would work very well in your trailer, according to Furrion. The night vision capabilities of this system are good enough that it will work in complete darkness, but the detail you'll be able to see will be limited. Wiring a strip light like # ILL72CB would provide some extra illumination for the camera and could be wired into the power feed for the cameras so it comes on when the camera is activated.

Will you need an extra camera? The answer to that will depend on how much detail you want to be able to see. If you're just wanting to check up and see that everything is still secured correctly and not moving around when it shouldn't be, a single camera system should work okay. If you wish to add an additional camera, you could do so using part # FCN48TASF. The monitor would allow you to view both cameras on a split screen.

You could power the camera and the lamp using the 12v feed from the 7-way, as the camera and the lamp have a very low power draw. If you decide to power the camera that way, you'll want to make that feed switchable from the cab of the truck.

The quickest way to activate that 12-v feed would be to make a wire run using # 10-1-1 from the positive battery terminal through a switch like # PK34212 back to the trailer connector. Run that circuit through a 40A breaker, part # 9510 located as close as possible to the battery. The switch would activate both the camera and the light strip.
