Question:

Whats the recommended cross bar spread to install the thule basket on my cars roof rack, the instruction booklet doesnt really specify anything other than min 20.

The Thule Canyon XT Roof Cargo Basket part # TH859XT requires a cross bar spread between 20" - 37" to install the basket on your roof rack.

To determine your cross bar spread you want to measure from the center of one bar to the center of the other bar. As long as the cross bar spread is between 20" and 37" you can install the basket.

What is the optimum distance between crossbars, on a 2018 Subaru Outback w the factory crossbars? I will need maximum carrying capacity on a long trip. Thanks!!

This depends on what accessories you plan on mounting. Every accessory, whether it be a cargo box, bike rack, kayak carrier, etc will have a specific crossbar spread range that they will work with. There's not necessarily an "ideal" spacing measurement. As long as you're in the accessory's range you're good to go.
