Question:
I have a 1997 coachmen catilina lite travel trailer. the identification of these axles are Dexter 2800 lbs max cap. serial number 2102232 and 2102233. Model 2800 SLR 12.8. Dexter is telling me that I must replace the whole axle. Because the backing plate is welded to the axle. Isnt there a replacement shoe for this application? And new hardware. springs, adjuster etc..

What you were told was only partially correct. If you wanted to replace the entire brake assembly but you had welded on brakes then you could not replace the assemblies. However, you can replace the worn brake parts.
There should be a number on the hub if it is a Dexter hub, with an 8-XXX, the Xs being some 3 digit number Dexter uses. With this number we can determine a little about the axles and see what kind of brake parts you need.
Also, you can look at the brakes and if they are bolted on then that is a clear indication they are not the weld on type. If it is the weld on type, then the shoe you have referenced, # bp04-065 would be correct. The adjuster is # BP10-060. Arms and springs are available and I can have them added to our site if needed.
