Question:
Can I use a 3500 lb hub on my 2000lb axle? As long as the bearing sizes are the same?

Technically yes, if you were replacing idler hubs, as long as the inner/outer bearing, grease seal AND wheel bolt pattern match, there's nothing that prevents you from using a 3,500 lb axle hub, like # 84545BX on a 2,000 lb axle. If the bearings and seal match but the bolt pattern is different, you would also need new wheels to make the hub compatible.
That being said, the only 2,000 lb hubs that we carry which would use the same inner/outer bearings and grease seal as a standard 3,500 lb hub, are # T1544500042 (5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern) and # T1662200042 (5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern). These are 8-1/2 inch diameter hubs/drums for use with hydraulic brakes. A comparable 3,500 hub # AKHD-545-35-K (5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern) or # AKHD-555-35-K (5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern), would use the same bearings and seal, but it would take a 10 inch brake assembly instead, standard on 3,500 axles.
So, unless you're not planning on running brakes on your trailer, there aren't any 3,500 lb hubs with an integrated 8-1/2 inch drum.
