Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub - 84545BX Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna take a look at the Dexter trailer idler hub assembly for 3,500 pound axles, with the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now this hub assembly is designed to fit trailer idler axles. Comes with everything shown here on the table. Comes with the hub assembly itself, the bearings, both inner and outer bearings. Now the bearing races are included, they actually pre-install them into the hub assembly. The grease seal is included, the grease cap, and the five wheel lug nuts are all included. This is a sturdy iron construction.

It is made in the USA. Again, the application for this is 3,500 pound trailer axles, with the number 84 spindles. The wheel size that'll work on this is from 13 inches up to 15 inches. Bolt pattern again is a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The wheel stud diameter is half-inch, and the weight capacity on this one assembly is 1,750 pounds.

So when one of these is used on one side and another one on the other side, it'll meet your maximum axle capacity of 3,500 pounds. The bearings are included. The inner bearing, that's part number L68149, has an inner diameter of 1.378 inches, goes right into that race like that. The outer bearing, the smaller one, is a part number L44649, has an inner diameter of 1.063 inches, goes in the bearing race just like that. Now the grease seal is part number 58846. It is a double-lip grease seal, has an inner diameter of 1.719 inches, outer diameter of 2.565 inches. That'll go in the back here after your bearing is installed.

The grease cap is part number F001518, has a flange diameter of 1.986. That'll go right on the outside here after your bearing is installed. And then the five lug nuts that are included to hold your wheel onto the hub is part number X1023R, and they're half-inch by 20 size lug nuts. But that should do it for the review on the Dexter trailer idler hub assembly for 3,500 pound axles, with the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

Hubs seem well made. Went together easily and went on the trailer with no issues. Only problem I had was with how they were shipped. Bearings, seals, caps and nuts were just taped to the the hubs and put in a box with no packing material. One of the caps was crushed and unusable. Just used one off the old hubs. 228931

  • How to Determine Hub and Spindle Size
  • The spindle dimensions are as follows: A is the mounting dimension, B is the seal dimension, C is the inner bearing surface, D is the outer bearing surface and E is the diameter of the threaded portion of the spindle for spindle nut selection. For a single axle trailer you can use two of either the item # R20484, if your axle is round or item # SP20484 if your axle is square....

The link provided will show you examples of hub-and-drum assemblies with your bolt pattern and wheel size range that fall into these two weight categories. For example, Dexter hub # 84545BX is for 3500-lb axles while # 8-258-5UC1 is for 2000-lb-rated axles. The hub assembly you referenced, part # 42655UC1 from Dexter, has a 6-on-5-1/2-inch bolt pattern...

  • Trailer Axle Recommendation for an ATV Trailer
  • For an offroad trailer like you described I would recommend a Timbren Axle-Less system like the part # A12WS545 would be a great choice. This is a 1,200 lb axle that depending on how much you plan on towing in the trailer might be more than enough by itself and wouldn't require a second axle. This system comes with the suspension, the spindle, and the hubs all together. Also, this system will give great ground clearance since there doesn't need to be an axle running between the two sides.
