Towing Bike Rack Availability with 5 Drop Ball Mount for Towing Vintage Trailer

Published 04/15/2019

Question:

Thanks Jon, If I used the swagmann S64644 and an extended ball mount, maybe the curtis D-28. Would that work ok? Would that decrease the tongue weight that I could tow. I have 2 campers. both about 1200-1800 pounds in weight and the traverse can tow 5000 lbs.. Thanks

We do have ball mounts with a 5" drop that you can use with the Swagman Traveler XCS # S64664, but none of our towing bike racks come with a ball mount that has a 5" drop (none of them actually come with a ball mount as the pictures are for demonstration purposes).

If you would like to stick with the XCS that you referenced then I recommend using the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit # 989900 for 2" trailer hitches. This comes with a 2 different ball mounts, one of which has a 4" drop (which should still be just fine), as well as 2" and 1-7/8" hitch balls, plus hitch pin & clips and a storage bag. The closest thing to this with a 1-1/4" ball mount is the part # C45521 with a 3-1/4" drop.

Another bike rack you may be interested in is the Jack-It 2 Bike Rack # LC429756. This installs at the same location as your electric trailer jack and increases the amount of space required for towing. When you reach your destination or you are home you can use the Bump-It # LC723359 to carry this bike rack with your trailer hitch. You can also add locks to this setup with the part # e98891.

Yes, you can definitely use the Swagman Traveler XCS # S64664 with the Curt Ball Mount # D-28 and it will not decrease the tongue weight rating of your trailer hitch. If you check out the linked review video of the Swagman XCS you can see that we actually use a pretty long ball mount in the video as well.
