In order to install a 7-way trailer connector on your 2019 Subaru Ascent you will first need a 4-way trailer connector if you do not already have one. For this, I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # C56040. The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness is very easy to install and it does not require any splicing which you can see in the attached video.
Once you have the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness you can then install the 7-way trailer connector for which I recommend using the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation part # ETBC7L. This harness will plug into the 4-way you just installed and then require two additional connections, a ground and a power wire which will need to be ran to the vehicle's battery. There is no a direct plug and play 7-way for your Ascent which is why you need to combine the above two harnesses.
For a brake controller to use with the above 7-way trailer wiring harness, I recommend the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180. The Echo is a relatively new brake controller that is gaining a lot of popularity. The reason for this is because it does not require any modifications to the tow vehicle, it just plus into the 7-way and you use your phone to customize settings and activate the manual override. The other major reason as to the growing popularity of this brake controller is because it uses a device you are already comfortable using (your phone), you do not need to read an entire comprehensive manual and familiarize yourself with the controls and codes to use it. Please note that if your phone loses power the brake controller will still function as normal.
