If you're looking for an American-made hitch that rides quietly, offers a quick and easy setup, and provides you with supreme handling, the Blue Ox SwayPro might be just what you're after. When we tested this system, the truck and trailer felt like one unit, and noise wasn't an issue at all. Overall, the SwayPro came out on top and proved to be one of our favorite weight distribution systems.

Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Blue Ox SwayPro Offers Superior Sway Control

Blue Ox SwayPro Positive Caster

The SwayPro is designed to keep your trailer centered behind your vehicle as you tow, no matter what crosswinds or obstacles try to get in your way. To do this, the head on the system is built with a positive caster angle. You might've heard of caster in reference to your car; it's the same technology that vehicles use to stay centered on the road. When you turn a corner in your car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically returns to center. This is caster taking over. Well, the SwayPro functions much the same way. The positive caster angle that's built into this hitch works in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force that keeps your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle.

Blue Ox SwayPro System with Built-In Sway Control Hooked Up

The trunnions inside the head assembly hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly hold your trailer in line.

A close-up shot of the Blue Ox SwayPro's bracket shows the chain rotated and pulled taught with very few chain links exposed

At the other end of this weight distribution system, you'll find 2 more points of built-in sway control. Blue Ox's rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible, with the majority of the chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. This means that each chain is held more stable than they are in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed.

This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from swaying - all without the creaking, grinding, and popping noises you get with friction-style sway control setups. Moreover, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage anything.

The Blue Ox SwayPro's No-Hassle Setup

When it's time to install the system for the first time, you might be surprised at how easy it is to do. All in all, you can probably have it done within an hour - 2 at the most.

First, the head. With just the right amount of adjustment angle already preset, it's ready to go right out of the box! No need to fine-tune it with hard-to-access washers or a difficult-to-use thumbscrew! The only thing you'll need to adjust is the height of the head on the shank. After that, to get the trunnion bars installed, just insert them into the sockets, and lock them in place with the included pins and clips.

Quick Tip: If you upgrade to a new trailer in the future, and you end up needing a system for a different tongue weight, you can just swap out the SwayPro's spring bars without having to buy a whole new hitch.

To get the Blue Ox SwayPro ready to go, just insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Other weight distribution systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. To get the SwayPro ready to go, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 1,175 lb Dry Tongue Weight Trailer
With your tongue weight at 1,175 lbs when loaded, you also need to account for any cargo weight behind the rear axle as well to get the total tongue weight rating. I've attached an article to assist. You are correct that your current system is underrated for your application. My recommendation is the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37140ET rated for total tongue weights between 1,000 and 1,400 lbs. • Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control For 3 Inch Hitch & 10,500 lb Trailer
Hi Steve, I totally understand, as those Pro Pride hitches are great but reaaaaaaaal expensive. So we can get you weight distribution, but due to the size your hitch and weight of your trailer, there will be a cost because there are few options and it's going to take multiple parts. What you'll need to do is get a weight distribution hitch and change out its shank, so let's go ahead and start with the weight distribution that is rated correctly for your 10,500 lb trailer: - Blue Ox SwayPro...

  • How to Pick Out a Weight Distribution With Sway Control for a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban 2500
Tanya, the weight distribution system you choose is going to depend on the total tongue weight of that horse trailer. What you're going to need to do is get that trailer loaded up like you're ready to haul it, and then have it weighed. That tongue weight figure, whatever it is, is what you'd need to go by when you pick put a system. Ideally you'd want your tongue weight to land somewhere in the middle of the systems capacity so you give yourself plenty of room for error or abnormalities....

  • Recommended Tire for Camper With 7,700 lb GVWR
A radial tire is actually a better option than a bias tire; radial tires are going to flex more than bias tires and also run cooler, which means they are better for standard driving. A bias tire is going to be better for off-road, agricultural use so I highly recommend a radial tire for a camper. In terms of your load range C tire with a rating of 1,820 lbs, that would mean when inflated to the max 50 psi the tires have a capacity of 7,280 lbs and you will want a capacity that is at least...

Hey Ron, thanks for reaching out! Your 2012 Airstream Flying Cloud 27FB has a GVWR of 7,600 lbs so your current 15K weight distribution could be rated a bit high for your trailer. The Blue Ox SwayPro 15K # BXW1500 has a tongue weight range of 1,000 lbs - 1,500 lbs which is pretty wide and fits right in your trailer tongue weight range (your proper tongue weight can be anywhere from 760 lbs - 1,140 lbs when fully loaded). The B&W Continuum Weight Distribution System part # BW78FR per B&W, does have built-in sway control. I'm not sure which Blue Ox TrackPro weight distribution hitch they gave you but based on the bouncing there is a good chance the system is rated too high for your tongue weight. It could also be that it isn't rated high enough so it is completely ineffective. Tongue weight is typically 10-15% of your loaded trailer weight and with a dry weight of 8,500 lbs you're already looking at 850-1,275 lbs of tongue weight.
