Question:

HI Have a Keystone cougar 2004 254 fifht wheel. I wonder what would be the right replacement part for a electric landing gear follow leg Is the LIPPERT LC179014? correct? In therms of WEIGHT RATING? My GVWR is 10.400 Pounds The trailer has 2 axles, 4 wheels. I understand the LIPPERT should have a lifting weight of 2500 Pounds per leg, when run on 1 Motor. So togehter 5000 Pounds. Is that enough? My previous legs broke internal the gears. All of those legs beeing 10 or 14 years old. They broke, and the trailer fell down about 2-3 inches. one time onto the truck-hitch no problem one time free standing, it was then standing on the lead leg for 2-3 minutes until I was able to jack it at the hitch again. I am concerned these legs will KILL me one day. If both break, I am underneath. Do these legs kill people? What if BOTH just break?

The correct landing gear leg for your 2004 Keystone Cougar 254EFS is more than likely going to be either the Replacement 29-1/2" Long Follow Jack part # LG-179014 or the Replacement 33-1/2" Long Follow Jack part # LG-177201. In order to determine which one you need, you will have to measure the length of the outer tube on the landing gear leg you have now. I have attached a photo that shows where to measure for you. The Lippert 29-1/2" Follow Jack part # LC179014 that you referenced can be swapped out for the Replacement 29-1/2" Long Follow Jack part # LG-179014 if you like but it is less cost effective and has a lower weight capacity unless using dual motors, then it is the same.

The first two landing gear legs both have a 4,000 lb weight capacity which is going to be doubled on your trailer as you have both a drive and follow leg. The weight capacity of this landing gear legs will be plenty for the 10,400 lb gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of your trailer because they only really need to be rated for the tongue weight of the trailer which is typically 15-20% of the gross trailer weight (GTW). The more room for error you have, the longer they will last and the safer you will be standing underneath them.

If you are concerned with the landing gear legs failing which is a possibility for any of them over a period of time then you might look into adding a king pin stabilizer like the Ultra-Fab Economy 5th Wheel King Pin Tripod Stabilizer part # UF19-950500. The stabilizer is going to take some stress off the landing gear legs and help keep the RV more stable. I have attached a review video for you.

The landing gear legs themselves do not kill people directly but if they both were to fail and the trailer dropped while you were underneath then this could certainly kill you, yes. However, it is very unlikely for them to just break, they would have to either snap in half or become detached from the mounting brackets in order to completely drop. The stabilizer is an added point of contact which in turn means more safety/stability.
