You previously indicated installing facing downward. However i see everywhere installing of front facing forward, and back facing backward

It really is up to you how you want to install the 2-Piece Polypropylene Trailer Vent # HMAV2-AVT2 that you referenced. The safest way will be with the opening facing down so that water doesn't leak in but we have seen people face the opening rearward without problem as well.
