Landing Gear Legs Click and Stop While Extending

Published 10/25/2018

Question:

I have 2008 Cedar Creek Silver Back 5 wheel trailer with electric front landing jacks. When extending the jacks to lift the trailer the motor and jacks start making loud clicking sound and grinds to a hault. I then have to resort to hydraulic bottle jacks to complete the leveling process. I dont know if I have striped a gear on my dollies or the motor that causes the clicking sound or maybe the motor isnt strong enough to handle the load. Im looking for trouble shooting suggestions before I take it to a RV center for diagnostics or just break down and try to replace the whole system myself. I can use some help

You are right on the money with your diagnosis, it is more than likely either a striped gear or worn out motor. In order to test this you first going to want to take all of the weight off the landing gear legs and then remove the connecting rod, gearbox, and motor. Once this is done you can take a handle or pair of pliers and extend each of the jacks fully while listening for any noise or resistance at certain spots while turning (make sure the legs are level when reattached).

If you don't hear or feel anything then it is most likely the motor or gearbox that needs replaced. The gearbox is also easy to rule out, just take your pliers and rotate the shaft while listening for noise and feeling for resistance. If there is resistance or noise in either leg then you would need to remove the end cap look inside for any parts that are damaged.

To test the motor you will first want to use a multimeter to ensure it is receiving 12 volts and the just use it to extend/retract the legs without any weight on them. If it works fine with no weight but clicks when weight is applied then you know it is bad and needs to be replaced.

If it turns out any of gears are stripped then you can most likely use either part # LG-146059 for the lead leg or part # LG-146060 for the follow leg. If it turns out it is the motor then you can use part # LG-196308. We also have the replacement gear box if that is the problem, part # LG-179015.
