Video Transcript for Stromberg Carlson Electric Landing Gear High Speed Motor Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the rebuild process for the Stromberg Carlson landing gear. This is going to work out for the LG1 and LG2 style systems, just the standard duty. Now, we have two different replacement motors available. This is the high-speed, part number LG-141893. That's going to give you a 20% speed improvement as compared to the standard speed, which is part number LG-142178. Now, if they become bent or damaged, we've got the replacement foot plates. It's going to have your pin and clip.

The part number is LG-119225. The replacement aluminum gear box part number is LG-179015. We also have the upgraded spring-style pin. It's going to make it a lot more similar to a drop-leg style of jack. That part number is LG-119113. Now, for the foot plate replacement, of course, that's going to be very, very straight-forward.

Just going to pull the clip if yours still has it and pull out the pin. That's going to come off. You'll see the indentation right here designed for a pin to slide through. Bring our new foot plate, put it in place. Slide our pin through and re-secure it with the clip. Now on the standard configuration, your landing gear is going to have a pin and clasp here that will pull.

We adjust this to the typical height, slide that back in, and latch it. That doesn't take too much work, and it's not a terrible job to do, but these do sometimes get lost and misplaced, so what they've come up with is a quick-release pin style. It'll make it more like a drop-leg. Let's take a look at that on the other side. Now, to install the quick-release pin, just remove the nut on each carriage bolt.

You see that's going to allow it to separate. We'll pull out the original pin, replace it with the quick-release. Now, you could put in either side that you want. Typically, you'll want it on the side you'll be operating it from. Or, if you don't have the head room or the clearance, you can operate it so it's easy to get to from the outside of the camper. It's going to slide right through the other hole that was there. See our pin coming out right there Return this portion of the bracket. Then we'll use our 10 mm socket and get those tightened down. As you do, it's going to draw the two sides of the clamp around the leg and it gets a really nice hold. At that point, that's all there is to it. You see now we're going to have that quick-release option, which will allow us to drop the leg to the ground, raise it to the first click, and then operate our equipment. As far as the motor and gear box replacement goes, this is also something that's really quite simple to do. Hand tools are really all that's required. We need to separate the cross shaft from the gear box for the gear box replacement. For the motor replacement, you just want to remove the two screws that have the flathead slot in them. There's one there and one caddy-corner to it. They're always on opposing sides here. Now, your motor should be wired up if it's been working. Once that's up, you see the motor just slides off. Of course, you'll have to disconnect your wiring at this point. We can place our new motor on, whether it's the standard-duty here or the high-speed in which we told you about. We can install that one for you. Now again, this just basically saves you time. This is going to give you a 20% increase in your speed just by increasing the RPM the motor is going to turn. It goes from 5,500 up to 7,140. It uses the same size hardware, the same mounting locations. At that point, you'll just butt connect your wiring back with your wiring harness. You can use part number DW05745. It's a heat shrink connector. It'll give you superior moisture resistance. Now, to replace your gear box, you'll want to separate the motor. Then with the 7/16 wrench and socket, we're going to remove the bolt that ties our lead leg to the follow leg. Once that's off, we're just going to separate the two legs. We're also going to pull off the spacer bushing that's there. Your gear box is going to slide right off. It's a direct replacement. It's going to be an exact fit for you. You just take your new gear box, slide it back in, and you want to ensure that the leg sits between these two tabs. You see how that's going to fit right in there Then our bushing will go back on, and we can put our crossbar back on. It's just a matter of replacing your nut and bolt and putting your motor back on, and we'll be ready to use our landing gear again. All right, ready for use. That's going to complete our look at the rebuild process for the Stromberg Carlson landing gear set. We hope we've showed you that with a few simple parts you can rebuild your landing gear rather than having to replace it.

I usually default to [online vendor] but I'm very glad I purchased this through etrailer. It was very refreshing to have US based support team who knows their products. Easy to install upgraded gear box. If you have Stromberg landing gear with plastic housing, it will break, and you will get stranded one day. Mine lasted 10 years before failing. Oldy enough the same week my LCI slide motor gear (also plastic) broke. Better swap them both out while your rig is safely parked at home.

Were hearing an issue with one of our Lippert Ground Control 2 leveling jacks. This went away after cleaning and reassembly but decided to get a gear box on hand as it will fit any of the 4 jacks. Could not find the gear box on ET but Lori B., our sales associate, was able to find the correct part using the Lippert part number. She is great and very helpful. This is an aluminum housed unit instead of the plastic housing used originally. Wish ET sold the bushing (nut) and screw that hold the motor and gear box onto the leg.

This Aluminum landing gear box is the best, heavy duty looking, the original was made of plastic and cracked. I still need to install the new gear box and I will give you an up data after installation. Thanks George for the emails and fast shipping. The photo is of my old gear box that has cracked at the bottom.

Easy online order and delivery was exceptional!! I received my item within 3 days. Better than [online vendor]

Exact match for what came off my 5er except this one was metal and not missing a corner. Unbelievable that the factory would use a cheap lightweight plastic piece of garbage to do a high-torque job but this is the perfect replacement. Now I just need to remove each landing gear leg and clean, lube , and/or replace parts as necessary to prevent trashing my new gearbox. Another factory fallacy: lifetime lubrication. Hah! Everything mechanical needs lube and your landing gear is no exception. My only complaint is I paid for 3-day shipping but didn't realize it was 3 business days and received my gearbox 8 days later because of a weekend and the TG holiday. No one's fault but my own, live and learn.

Comments
The gearbox worked perfectly and is what the factory should be putting on when new but you know how that goes. I have since sold my trailer but the gearbox was working as it should. I ended up replacing one landing gear leg should have replaced both but the gears were in fine shape that caused the problem with cracking the original gearbox and since then had no more problems. Thank you for caring enough to send this email, as I know customer service agents are busy and most companies just dont take the time to reach out to customers after the fact. I have learned that etrailer is the premier site to go to for trailering issues and have used your site for wiring problems and mechanical issues alike. Thank you for providing the rv customer with a great resource to go to for much needed info and parts. I have and will continue to recommend your site to those in need.

This was a direct replacement for my damaged plastic gear box. I have a 2011 Forest river Wildcat 5th Wheel. I did have to take a 1/4" off of the gear box retaining collar to line up the screw. Resolved my problem, which was the small gear had teeth missing and would bind under load, tripping the 30 amp fuse. Thanks for the reliable service and informational videos.

Works exactly as needed, installed very quick thanks in part to a you tube video. This part was 30$ cheaper then the plastic replacement and what should of been used by manufacturers.

I purchased this to replace the "composite", read junk plastic gearbox from Atwood. My local RV stores wanted $100 for the junk plastic one. One store said they can't keep them in stock ever since Atwood changed them from metal to "composite" read cheap plastic. I found this aluminum gearbox to be sturdy and an exact replacement for the existing one. Where the plastic one would flex and the gears would slip when lifting my 16,000 trailer, this one is sturdy and just works. Thanks for a cost effective replacement.

Comments
While I have not used the trailer a great deal, the product does seem to be working as designed. Thank you for the follow up.

The gearbox I ordered arrived in good shape. Andrea made sure I had the right one before purchasing, and it was an exact match for my broken gearbox. The product arrived on time, and helped me get my camper back on the road. Though the the gearbox in the picture (and my broken gearbox) are black, the one I received was not painted. Hardly an issue, but thought it was worth mentioning. Thanks etrailer, great service again!

Comments
Its been a year and the gearbox is holding up well. I think in this instance the best compliment I can give is that I dont ever think about the gearbox when running the landing gear in and out. This repair forced me to learn how to gain achess to the leg bevel gears and where to apply grease. Armed with this knowledge, I expect my new gearbox to provide many more years of service.

I would like to complement the folks at etrailer for a job well done. I recently purchased two gearboxes # LG-179015 and a motor # LG-196308 for my Keystone Cougar fifth wheel. Your people were very helpful at helping me be sure I was ordering the correct parts and got them to me in just 3 days, and the prices were extremely fair. Installation was a piece of cake and it works better now than when it was new. I have purchased from etrailer before and will continue to do so in the future, definitely a " one stop shop " for trailer parts. Thanks for everything !

Spoke to William B. at e-trailer and told him my landing gear was skipping or jumping sometimes as I raised the 5th wheel up. I had already put a new electric motor on because the other got hot quickly. William diagnosed the problem as the gearbox. He sent one out quickly as I had plans the next weekend. After I put the gearbox on it, I raised it several times and it works great. Thanks William and e-trailer for your help and quick processing.

Excellent service and the advice of the tech, Michael, was outstanding. He gave me several options I could use to replace my gear box. I am currently trying to resolve a continuing problem with my landing gear and will use this service again and for any future issues. Thank you for all your help.

I could not be happier with how my new landing gears are performing. The landing gears are continuing to perform like new. I will definitely use etrailer again for any parts I might need. They are on my favorites list for quick and ready access.

One week ago my 5th wheel landing gear broke. Today it is up and running thanks to Etrailer. I would not have been able to do it without the help from Lisa, Jennifer, Jameson , John and others through emails and half a dozen phone calls for technical help. I will definitely buy from etrailer again. Replaced both legs, cross-shaft, and gearbox.

Installed this on my 2008 Montana Mountaineer. Installation was a direct replacement. No issues worked great! I installed the upgraded electric motor as well between them both I am able to lift the 5th wheel higher and get it on my truck.

Great replacement for our original Venture Manufacturing gearbox that was housed in plastic and was the reason for it's failure. The replacement only took my husband about 15 minutes. Also my husband called the next day after placing the order to verify we ordered the correct part and was treated politely and they promptly to changed the order to the proper item.

I have a 2007 crossroads cruiser and this product was a perfect replacement and also upgrade from the plastic gearbox that was factory installed. I ordered it on sunday and received it Wednesday. I have bought multiple products from etailer. They are the first place I look when shopping for trailer or trailer pulling gear.

- LG-179015

The part is is better than I the original product, but this didnt' solve my problem. As the motor starts to turn, after about 5 seconds it sounds as if it has resistance. I guess the next step would be to replace the whole landing gear.

The replacement/repair parts you mentioned weren't intended for use on Atwood landing gear jacks like what you have. The issue is most likely related to that. So since Atwood is out of business and the repair parts you mentioned are most likely still good your best option would be to replace the legs of the jacks so that you aren't buying parts again. It does sound like your gear box is at fault though so it would be time to replace it. I'd go with whichever of the first two you mentioned that has best price as they are essentially the same.
