Question:
how absolutley essential is this part?

Expert Reply:
The Replacement Pull Pin part # Y8880153 is a fail safe for the SpeedKnob on certain Yakima bike racks. There is always a possibility that the SpeedKnob can fail in which case your bike rack and bikes would go tumbling off the vehicle to sure destruction if not for the pull pin so yeah, I would say it is rather essential to both others on the road and your bikes for safety. The Yakima warranty your bike rack came with would also be voided if the pull pin was not used.
I would not want to risk both the safety of others on the road and safety of my bike rack and bikes for such an inexpensive part.
