Question:

Id like to by a tow hitch. I have a Mazda CX5 2016 2.5 L engine, 4WD. I am not sure if its early 2016 or mid, but, I will look that up. I have the manual, and was yet alittle confused about exactly how much I can towsince I am interested in getting a camper trailer smaller - like an airstream Bambi or something of similar size. From what I understand in the manual, I can tow a trailer up to about 2000lbs fully loaded, but, was curious if you might have a better idea of its towing capabilities, having sold hitches for this model before, and then which tow hitch you might recommend that might allow for me to tow a camper trailer. I did see the Class III 2inch reciever Item 76138, but, I am so NOT familiar with any of this that I could use some guidance. Ultimately, though, I would like to tow a small camper trailer and wanted to see if you could let me know of exact towing weights as the user manual specs get a bit confusing with some terminology. So I pulled up an online copy of your owner's manual to see if I can help you make some sense of it. One thing is for sure, the terminology is pretty misleading and can be confusing. The main takeway, I think you need to be concerned with is the gross combined vehicle rating (GCWR). It also talks about the total trailer weight (TTW) or 2,000 pounds but when you read what they define as the TTW it gets too confusing. I think you can simplify it by using the GCWR which the manual states is 6,064.8 pounds. That's an oddly specific number but we can still use it.

The best (although, I admit not the easiet) way to get an exact number on what you can tow is to load your Mazda just as you would if you were going on a trip when you'd be towing the trailer. And I mean just like you would; include people, pets, stuff and anything else because you need to find out how heavy the vehicle will be. Then take the Mazda to a commercial scale and weigh it. Subtract that weight from the 6,064.8 GCWR and what's left is how much it can tow.

Unfortunately, no matter what the hitch, and other parts, you put on a vehicle are rated for they will not increase its towing capacity because you're always limited by your lowest rated component, which is usually the vehicle itself.

If you find you can tow a trailer I recommend using the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver, part # 76138, because it works with the early and mid-year models of 2016. Plus, I like the look with most of the receiver being hidden behind the bumper. Then add our ball mount kit, part # 989900, and a 4-way wiring harness, part # 118563, to comoplete your tow setup.

Hi! I have a 2016 Mazda CX-5. It sure seems like i need1. the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver, part # 76138,2. a 4-way wiring harness, part # 118563,I have the trailer balls and mounting partsIm curious if you have any cargo baskets that would work well with the Mazda.So before I buy, just want want to make sure im buying the right products.
