Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5

Today on our 2016 Mazda CX5 we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Custom Fit Class 3 trailer hitch receiver. Part number is 76138. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like installed on our CX5. As you can see, it offers a really nice, clean appearance. The crosstube is going to be hidden behind the rear fascia there, so all we're really going to be adding is the receiver tube opening and safety chain connection points. You can see it's going to hug nicely right along the bottom edge of the fascia there and still offer us pretty good ground clearance here behind the vehicle. Now this is a Class 3 hitch so we've got a 2" by 2" receiver tube opening. That's going to be ideal for just about any type of hitch accessory you want to use.

Class 3s are very versatile. Got the rounded-style reinforcement collar here around the end. Something different than other hitches you'll see, there are two holes in the hitch. We only want to use the larger hole that's closest to the front of the vehicle for securing our items. When we do that, we want to use a Class 3 accessory.

You'll see we're going to have plenty of room around there. Whether you're using just a regular pin and clip, locking hitch pin, or anti-rattle device, you should have plenty of room. One anti-rattle device available is the j-pin stabilization system. That's the only time we're going to use this smaller hole. We've got a rounded steel stock safety chain connection point here. Should give us plenty of room to connect just about whatever size chain that you might have. Now this hitch offers a 675 pound tongue weight rating.

That's the maximum downward force that we can put at our receiver tube opening. It gives us a 4,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. That's going to be the total weight of our trailer and then anything we we're to add onto it. You will, however, want to check the owner's manual on the CX5 to see what its tow rating is, and go off whichever of those numbers are the lowest. Now a few measurements that are going to be helpful when it comes time to select your ball mount, bike rack, or hitch cargo carrier will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening we've got about 13-1/2". Then from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper it's about 3. Now to begin our installation, we're going to need to lower down the exhaust.

We've got a few exhaust hangers. We've got two on the driver side here, one located on the front, one located on the backside of the main exhaust across the rear. We're also going to have one here at the rear and one here at the front. Same position on both sides. Now before we lower those down, we do want to support our exhaust from underneath. We're going to use a cam buckle strap, bring that right along the underside of that exhaust. That's just going to give it something to rest on so we don't do any damage closer towards the front. Now to lower these hangers down, it's a good idea to use a little bit of spray lubricant. You're probably going to need a big screwdriver or a pry bar. Basically, you just want to push out from behind. Once you've got those off, you just rotate them down. Or if you took it off the bottom, just rotate it up. Now while supporting your exhaust, we'll put just a little slack in that strap. That should allow us to move it side to side a little bit so we can access our bolts. Now we'll be using two attachment points on each side of our vehicle. They're going to be exactly the same. Basically you've got the two slightly oblong holes here. We're going to use the one closest to the front of the vehicle on each side. If we look all the way back just in front of the rear edge of the frame, there's going to be a large hole. That's right there. That's actually going to act as our access hole. We're going to take our coiled pull wire, going to go in our forward attachment point. We're going to come down out. Place on the square hole spacer block and also our carriage bolt. We're just going to use the standard pull wire method here. Feed them in separately, bring that down and through just like that. Now for the rear attachment point we're going to use the reverse pull wire method. We'll show you that now. In this case you want to put your spacer block and your bolt together, then thread on your pull wire. Going to place the bolt up in the frame, then your spacer block. Then we'll pull that down through just like that. Now you've got enough pull wire so you can leave one attached to each side, then use it to guide your hitch up into position. I like to have them out of the way just so I can put the washer and nut on immediately. At this point we can go to the driver side and we'll repeat the exact same process there. Now with the help of an extra set of hands, we'll get our hitch lifted up into position. One thing you want to do, remember when I took our exhaust hangers off, I took them off at the top and they we're still hanging on the bottom. You want to take those off and put them on the top. Once your hitch is in position, you're not going to be able to do that, so it's important that these are on the top hangers. Then we'll lift our hitch in. Now you will pull down on your fascia just slightly here to allow your hitch to clear. Then we'll bring our bolts right down through our two holes. I'm going to slide on a conical tooth washer. The teeth of that washer should face up towards the hitch. Then we'll thread on one of our hex nuts. Once we run those up to where they're snug, that should hold our hitch in position, will allow us to get the rest of our hardware in place. Now we want to go through and snug down our hardware. For the rear bolt here you're going to need a longer extension. We're going to use a 6" here. That will allow us to get on it, or a swivel might also work. When you torque it down, also going to need an extension, so keep that in mind. Now we're going to go through and we want to get all of our hardware torqued down to the specification. You'll find that listed in your instructions. Now we'll put a little bit more spray lubricant on our exhaust hangers. We'll start getting it back into position. It's going to be a little tight between the hitch but it will go. You'll just press your exhaust over towards the passenger side, bring it up. We'll get this side started. Then we'll reverse it on the other side. We'll push it as far as over this way as we can. inaudible 00:06:37. Then the front hangers will be right up here. They should just slide on inaudible 00:06:43. Now with our exhaust back in place, we can take down our strap and our hitch will be ready for use. That's going to complete our installation of the Draw-Tite Custom Fit Class 3 trailer hitch receiver, part number 76138, on our 2016 Mazda CX5.

The trailer hitch fit well onto the frame of the Mazda CX-5. It was a little difficult to install by myself. Really would have been much easier with two people. But etrailer did not indicate that it was a one-man job. It's obvious that it is a well built trailer hitch - Strong, heavy, and as I said before, fit well. The instructions which came with it did not seem all that helpful. Not sure if I could have installed the hitch if that were the only information I had. Fortunately, there were various videos I was able to find through YouTube and on the etrailer site which were closely related to my situation. 483458

Ive only needed to use it a few times in the year that I had it. But it has always worked fine without issue. The paint has also held up well. No problems.

Got my hitch yesterday afternoon for my 2018 Mazda CX-5 my friend and I install it at his garage, literally took us about a half an hour. Great product will make, I was very happy with it. The video on the website make it very easy to install thank you etrailer. Highly recommended. Sorry no pictures, but it looks great just like the video. 567312

Purchased for a 2018 Mazda CX 5. Hitch fit well. Important to leave rear rubber muffler hangers on top hanger; push all the way back in once you have the muffler off. Not enough space between hitch and muffler hanger, to get back on, if you don't. Rear threshold panel comes off like every other year, but side panels have one push button trim tab on each side, then two trim pops along rear hatch sides(see pictures), 1 screw in hold down latches, and in front, each side. Bolts on hold downs, back left and right and in the front. Trim will pop right off, but I only moved it out enough to work. On passenger side, push trim in place first before pushing in the seat latch. It has a pop attachment on it. There is a grommet on the left side that you can run a power wire through and a good ground bolt. The 2018, has full undercover and that has to be removed to run the wire up to the battery. Takes pictures before you start. It was a real pain, but that is what I started and finished. The trailer harness could have been about 6 inches longer. It doesn't quite reach the hitch and I stuck the power module as far back on the left side, as I could. Everything looks good and it works, but it took me, working by myself, a lot longer than the times listed.. 473732

After one year and many miles of towing and carrying a rear rack, this hitch has worked well. I especially like the J pin stabilizer pin that I use with it. It keeps the tow bar and ball solid so there it no rattle. Well worth the extra cost.

As usual etrailer made sure my Draw-Tite hitch arrived quickly to my door step. While the item was packaged nicely, It was a little disappointing to see multiple chips in the powder coating upon opening it up. While the chips will make no difference in the performance of the hitch, it was a little frustrating. Draw-Tite makes a quality product and I can't wait to get it installed. I would have given the hitch 5 stars if it wasn't for the powder coating chips. 466639

Product Was good and fit perfectly on my car.Installation is super easy as with instructions and videos. This is my first time installing a hitch so initially I struggled as due to lack of help. After a little research and with the help of a friend Installed in 15 Mins(Research and initials trail not counted).Things to remember. 1)Car ramps will help where we can pick from [hardware store]. 2)Flat head screwdriver and soap water is super good option for removing Exhaust from hangers. 3)Rubber bushes should be on top hooks and facing front side of the car(Not back side to-wards trunk). 4)Remove one facia screw(plastic clip) for easy adjustment which was not demonstrated in the video but advised in the manual. 5)Better to keep the fish wires of the back bolts to avoid pushing them inside the frame.(C-retention rings will help where manufacturer is not providing). 6)Second person will make the job easy. Paint Quality is very very poor which is pealing out as mentioned by others in this forum. Installed my Kuat rack which comes with stabilizer and fits perfect. yet to test on the roads. Pics or not so clear. 519916

The product works good as expected, I'm not one to hold a grudge but my experience with etrailer was less than spectacular, the hardware/mounting kit was not in the box when I received the hitch and it took 3 weeks for them to get me a replacement hardware kit and that was still missing parts... several emails and phonecalls were needed to get a product that I could install and use. probably won't be a return customer. 574590

I haven't used the hitch yet but installation was pretty straight forward. I used the video and it took me 1 1/2 hours to get everything done, but it could be much quicker for someone with all the right tools who knew what they were doing. I didn't have jack stands to raise the car so I pulled the passenger side of the car up onto a curb to at least give some extra room on one side. I used a large screw driver to get the rubber things which hold the muffler system off. Holding the hitch up while screwing on the bolts was a bit tricky but my wife and I got under the car and I held it up while she screwed on the bolts. Make sure you wear eye glasses so you don't get junk in your eye! I was able to use the torque wrench to tighten the forward bolts appropriately but I didn't have the right size extension to use it on the rear bolts so I just used a ratchet to tighten it as much as I could. I'm only using it for a bike rack so I'm not worried. 416888

I was happy that the product was packaged very professionally. Sometimes when you order a hunk of steel like this, the seller just wraps the ends and puts it on a truck and it gets scratched and dinged. The product was delivered in a sturdy etrailer box. Installation was on a 2014 cx-5. I chose to remove the muffler, which took about ten minutes. The hardest part of installation was getting the rear exhaust hangers back on. 1 hour total for me. The product itself is very sturdy...it is a big chunk of metal. Note that the towing capacity of my cx-5 is much lower than what this hitch is rated for. My reasoning for getting a 2 inch hitch was so that I could swap the hitch mount bike rack between my vehicles, and there are more used 2 inch bike rack options out there on craigslist than 1.25... just a tip. Dont plan on pulling much more with your CX-5 than some bikes or maybe a very small trailer. 451139

The hitch is great functionally, seems very solid and does what it’s supposed to do. It’s not very difficult to install and on the CX-5 it looks great without sticking out too much. What bothers me is the manufacturer’s claim that “The combination of an e-coat base and a powder coat finish provides excellent rust protection”. This is far from truth. The top coat started bubbling and peeling off and the hitch started rusting after less than 2 months after installation before even seeing any snow (see attached picture). I understand if this happened after a long and heavy winter but that was not the case. I’m not impressed with the top coat quality at all. 557444

It works great. I have only used it for a platform and that worked well on our long trip from PA to Honduras. This is not a fault of the hitch but we did scrape some speed bumps in Guatemala. I have never seen such nasty speed bumps. 10 mph is too fast. The instructions for routing the lighting wires were a little vague, possibly generic for more than one model but we got the lighting installed. I have not had to use them though. 572011

2017 Mazda CX5 -Purchased for hauling bikes/bike rack -Reasons for purchase over other hitches: Good instructions and video , I was confident this would fit my vehicle. Price. No Modifications to vehicle other than removing small trim piece. 2” is more versatile and can be used for other/bigger things in the future. Can be upgraded with wiring to tow larger things like trailers/campers. Can easily be Removed if no longer needed/wanted/sold. Product arrived promptly. Installation took approx 60minutes from taking it out of the box in my garage with NO jacks/ramps/lifts. I had my 13 year old son help for a few minutes to hold one side as I lifted it into place. Recommended Tools are a MUST. Disappointed that out of the box the paint was already flaking off! I did not bother complaining or returning....because after all this is going UNDER A Car.... BUT....the paint Should Survive Shipping! 503157

Fantastic product-fits like a glove on my '17 Mazda CX5 Grand Touring and feels rock solid while looking as good as any factory installations. Makes the universal hitches I've seen around look really bad. I installed it myself in 3 hours which is way off the 20 minutes for the pros but I took it easy and referred to the video a few times so I'm still ahead of the time to take it to the auto shop not to mention their cost to install. I worked it without elevating the rear so it was pretty tight but doable. A second man on the job would have helped a lot in maneuvering the hitch into position but I managed. A couple of the rubber exhaust hangars were a workout but finally gave way. I'll use this mainly for a bike carrier and maybe occasional light trailer towing (my limiting factor is now the car's capability, not the hitch). The install video was essential and covered things very well. 456493

Great products and fast delivery. I installed on a 2015 CX5. Getting exhaust removed from 4 rubber hangers was fun (soap does help). Next challenge was fitting the hitch between the exhaust and car frame by yourself. I ended up grabbing a bunch of scrap lumber and propped the hitch up. It is quite heavy and awkward working in your garage (not up on a lift like the pro's). I had problems clearing the rubber bumper but after lots of adjustments and getting the hitch supported with wood I got it. Wires that hold the bolts work great. Wiring package instructions were okay once I understood what they meant. Took a little to digest without pictures. All in all, went well, certainly not 20 minutes, more like 1 hour or more for hitch, and 1-2 hours for wiring - removing panels and feeding wire to battery took some time. I did crack 2 pieces of my trim popping the plastic parts up with a screw driver and fingers. Did not help it was very cold over Christmas time when I did this. Towed my pop up trailer 1000 miles without an issue. So can't complain! 464792

Pros: Great quality parts. Everything feels and look built really well. Packaging and shipping was great. You can tell there was thoughtfulness in delivering the product. Cons: You need a car lift. I have ramps that I used to raise the back up a couple feet and it wasn't nearly enough to lift the hitch up over the exhaust and secure it. Now I need to go to a shop :/ 432506

I’d continue my 45. The hitch itself is working great, but the round washer that’s used to bolt the hitch on snapped in half. That was disappointing. I’ve towed multiple times prior to this with no issue. Overall happy

Great Product! - Super Easy installation. Just bought a 2018 CX-5 and felt that $495 was too steep for the Mazda 1" hitch. Did my research and found that this was the beefiest available (600+ lbs tongue weight!). Got it on Friday, and installed it on Saturday. The instructions stated 20 minutes for a pro. I'm a fair backyard mechanic. I do brakes, oil changes, minor repairs like a window regulator, so I'm not averse to tools, but am no pro. This was a piece of cake to install! I took me about 40 minutes start to finish. Granted, I have a limited garage (no lift, I used jack stands to lift up the rear for more working room, though I'm not sure it was truly necessary), but I did buy the special pliers to remove the exhaust donuts (Lisle #38350) which was worth every penny of $15. The instructional videos made it super easy and gave me all the detail I needed. I would highly recommend this product. Looks good, Strong enough and has the full 2" receiver capacity (just remember the vehicle can't probably handle a heavy trailer. the manufacturers rating is 2000 lbs.) 491478

Item was delivered fast and in good condition. Installation went without a problem. Perfect fit for Mazda CX 5 with clear instructions. I am sure than anyone with help and proper tools could easily do it himself, I just can’t do it because I had no help and have no tools so, had to take it to local mechanic’s shop and it took them about 30 min from start to finish. Besides, in case if anyone needs there is a step by step video with installation instructions on their website. Good customer service from etrailer.com, much better than from Amazon. This was my first personal experience with them and can recommend them to anyone and this hitch without hesitation. Thank you. 572708

DrawTite trailer hitch fit my CX-5 as advertised. Installation was very straight forward particularly due to the installation videos available on the etrailer web site. The Tekonsha wiring harness was simple to install once all of the interior trim was removed; something the etrailer video made easy. When I decided to purchase a trailer I knew that I'd have to get a hitch for my vehicle. Since I do not routinely pull trailers I knew little about hitches and the other components associated with them. After looking around online I found etrailers.com. I called customer service and was connected to a very helpful person named Chedi. He explained the products available and what I'd need for my particular setup. My purchasing experience with etrailers was very good; from ordering, to receiving, to the installation. Thank you etrailers. 574870

We’ve been able to use the trailer hitch for 2 summers now for our bike rack and it’s worked out perfectly for us. The installation was a little tough because we didn’t have all the recommended tools, so I suggest reviewing the installation instructions and having the tools on hand before starting, but it has done its job for us. Customer service is also very friendly and attentive, so I’d gladly make future purchases from them 567168

Easy to use website, great installation video and a great product. The hitch had no damage upon arrival and looks very clean installed. I recommend having someone else with you as a second pair of hands. I could have done the install without putting my 2018 Mazda CX-5 on jack stands but having the extra clearance made things even easier. I have already recommended etrailer to my friends and have ordered a bike rack as well. I installed the hitch several weeks ago but only just this week toted a few fat tire bikes on my Yakima Ridgeback 4. The hitch and bike rack combo are perfect. Oh, and the shipping was fast. Showed up a few days early so it arrived just before the labor day holiday which was a bonus. 570256

I haven't used the hitch yet but the install was straight forward. I watched the videos for the 2016 and prior installs and my install was pretty much the same. My comments are: - the 2016 and prior models differ from the 2017 in a small way. There is a piece of trim that needs to be removed from under the bumper for the hitch to fit. It's mentioned in the included instructions but isn't shown on the earlier model videos. - the rear most carriage bolts are less straight forward to torque up. The front ones were easily accessible with an extension. The rear ones are more difficult to access. The instructions mention using a universal joint which I don't have. I ended up using a much smaller wrench and extension which got the job done. - I installed the hitch myself which wasn't too bad. I didn't raise the car but my garage has a slope up into it. I parked the rear wheels at the entrance to the garage and had a few extra inches of clearance. When installing the hitch I got it roughly in position and then lay on the ground so my knees supported the far end of the hitch while I wiggled it into position and threaded the fish wires through the hitch bolt holes. It would certainly have been easier to have some one assist but it's feasible to do it by yourself. - as someone mentioned on a prior review, ensure you have the muffler hangers attached to the top peg since you can't access this once the hitch is installed. The product came in a shipping box and was in great shape when it arrived. Shipping was prompt. I'm very pleased with the product and service. 374278

I've had the hitch for a year now and I just inspected it; no sign of any rust and the bolts are as tight as the day installed. The reciever is well manufactured and I've never had any noise issues, but I've also always used an anti-rattle J-Pin. I can easily reccommend this hitch to others. The hitch is an "under bumper" and except for the reciever it's hidden from view which I like. But, being so low to the ground there are some things to be aware of. First, because the hitch is low, when I'm towing the boat I need a riser to keep the trailer/boat level (I use an adjustable one). The other problem is I also use the hitch for a "wide" cargo basket and as the hitch is in-line with and close to the exhaust the basket is inline with the hot exhaust - which can easily melt/burn something inside the basket. To circumvent this, when using the basket I use an extender with the riser. It gives me enough distance out and up from the exhaust to not cause issues. 570036

Fine hitch, very sturdy. Arrived super quick from etrailer. Mounts slightly recessed from bumper with no bumper cuts necessary. Bought to use with single 1UP USA bike rack and the combo is rock solid with my 2017 Mazda CX-5 GT. Was worried that need to insert the rack 4+" into hitch receiver might not allow rack to clear the bumper when in its fold up position. etrailer looked at schematic and assured me it would. They were right! No issues. My only advice, if you plan to use the 1UP double rack AND keep it on the car all the time, you might choose a hitch that extends about .5" further out. This would allow the hatch door to clear the double rack in full fold up position and stay within 1UP insertion requirements. The door easily clears the single rack. Tried it with a 1UP add on (turning my single rack into a double) in full vertical fold up and was surprised to find it almost cleared as well when right at the minimum insertion! Anyway, fine hitch, thanks etrailer! 406513

This thing is heavy duty, excellent quality. I'm only using it for a bike rack but if you're going to tow a trailer this is the one you want. I watched the install video and it was very simple. I did use a floor jack as I did it alone. I ordered it on Monday late afternoon and it arrived on Thursday. Very happy, exceeded my expectations and looks great. 422155

I installed the hitch on a 2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring. The trailer hitch installed as described in the instructions and as shown in the video. However, reinstalling the muffler was a different story. I left the rubber hangers on the vehicle as shown in the video and as recommended by others. The front rubber hangers were easy to install. However, the side rails of the hitch prevent the "rear" rubber hangers from moving to the side which is necessary when installing the metal hanger pin into the rubber hanger's hole. There is a hole in the side rails that allows very limited movement of the metal pin but no movement of the rubber hanger which is required to get the last hanger installed. I was able to get one side in easily but attaching the other "rear" isolator took an inordinate amount of time, effort and forcing. I would not recommend this particular hitch if there is another option available. Other than the muffler installation, the hitch fits well. One point I would make about the hitch construction, the hitch is rated for and built for over twice my vehicles rated towing capacity. Building a hitch with metal thickness and strength three times that of the frame that it is attached to, provides no additional benefit but adds significantly more weight than is needed. With today's vehicles, 20 unnecessary pounds does make a difference. The video for installation of the harness was for a 2016 and the interior trim panels of my 2017 are completely different so I may wait till I can find a video on the 2017 model. 436592

Sorry for answering until now But I was not able to install until today I received on time with no problems. I was really easy to install, it takes me 45 min, but I did it on the floor without any help. I got it in order to install it on a Mazda CX-5 2017 (2018 mexican) to use my bike rack It was exactly what I expected Attached some photos Thanks 453462

Great product. I watched the video to walk me through the install. Found that by just forcing a short dowel rod to push the rubber exhaust mounts off their pins worked better than prying them off. This item would be perfect if the rear corners we're cut at a 45 degree angle instead of square cut. A 45 degree cut eliminates the need to bend the bumper facia to slide the hitch to it's mounting position. I mounted a 2x2 on my floor jack, which gave me a second set of hands to lift the hitch in place. Now to grab a bike rack! 552643

Perfect! Draw-Tite hitch receiver was shipped and delivered in a day and fit perfectly. Thank you etrailer! Was able to install it on my own by rising the vehicle onto a set of potable steel ramps and supporting the receiver with Jack stands to get it into place. The install did require some effort as I did it alone. Keeping the heavy receiver lifted-up onto the frame while trying to install the washer and nut was tricky. Definitely recommend having someone additional for help. 510679

My first comment is important for the next order you receive for this hitch on a 2017 CX-5. I installed the hitch today, On my 2017 CX-5 Grand Touring model. There is a trim piece on the bottom center of the rear bumper area, about 2 feet long L shaped and held in place by two push pin connectors. This trim piece must be removed to install Drawtite Hitch #76138. It cannot be reinstalled as the hitch fills the area under the bumper it is affixed to. This should be highlighted for future orders as this is a confirmed fit item and no mention was made by etrailer or Drawtite. Otherwise it is a perfect fit and the installation video made the rest of the job easy. Removal of this trim piece has no negative or visual effect that I can see. Next I will install the 4 pin wiring kit from Mazda for trailer lights. After that my last project will be the brake controller and 7 pin connector kit. I'll let you know how that goes. Thanks, Bob 397690

Hitch has been in service with three trips logged with camper so far. Performance was just as expected and problem free.

I ordered this for my 2018 Mazda CX-5 (grand touring) and the installation was straightforward as I just followed the video from the website. I did it myself with the help of a jack stand to support one side while i bolted the other side in place.(another set of hands would have made it easier but i still managed) Fit was good and the finish had a few minor scratches on it but nothing to worry about. As the video states when reinstalling the muffler on the rubber hangers attach the rear ones 1st and then the ones closer to the front.(WD-40 them all to help get them on and off easier) Very happy with the finished result. I ordered this to use with my bike rack and 2 bikes and just in case i ever want to tow a small open trailer i ordered this one instead of the class ll hitch. 520007

Delivery and product were excellent. With the helpful videos, installation was straightforward. I realize the item description said a part may be needed to be cut for the 2017 Mazda CX-5 GT model, but it would have been nice to have a custom made hitch fit perfectly without discarding a piece of the plastic under the bumper. There is a strip of plastic that needs to be removed and discarded with a flathead screwdriver for the hitch to fit on the GT model. Besides that, everything was of great quality and craftsmanship. After reading other reviews, I listened to others and left the rubber exhaust hangers on the top hooks, on the car, rather than on the exhaust itself. One thing to add was when I rotated the hanger to make installing the hitch easier, I rotated it back towards the rear, which I later learned took a little effort rotating it all the way forward and down to reattach the exhaust. I should have rotated the oval hanger forward, towards the front, which would have taken no effort rotating back down to reattach the exhaust. Don't know if that makes any sense, but I'll attach some photos for reference. 417989

2018 Mazda CX-5

I purchased the Draw-Tite hitch for our Mazda CX-5. It arrived as promised and fit perfectly. I found the website installation video was extremely helpful which made the self installation much faster than using only the supplied paper instructions. Total installation time was about 90 minutes with my wife helping support the hitch during it's installation. This part is at most 10 minutes so the vast majority of the work is a one man operation. I used standard 9" car ramps to raise the rear end and had plenty of room to work under the car. My only note in addition to the instructional video is to make sure you leave the rear most rubber isolators attached to the car, not the muffler, when lowering the muffler assembly. You will not have room to install them between the hitch and mounting bracket once the muffler is back up in position. The forward rubber isolators don't have the same restriction. The supplied hardware and aids to help install the washer/bolts in the frame were spot on. All in all I could not have been happier with both the installation and hitch itself. Lastly, as the instructions call out for the removal of a trim piece under the bumper prior to installation, I was able to cut and modify the original trim piece around the newly installed hitch so that it could be re-installed. Not sure it is really required but figured what comes off should go back on if possible. Pictures of both the final installation and of the re-installed trim piece below. Bottom line, Another great experience with Etrailer products ! 543979

Installation was pretty straight forward, but I did have to bend the rear upper hangers of the exhaust, so they could clear the mounting brackets for the hitch. Be sure to watch the video on this site!!! It will give some good pointers!!! Particularly where to put the "rubbers" for the rear exhaust mounts!! (HINT: Leave them on the car's hangers! Once the hitch is in place, you can not access two of the hangers!!) If you have no one to help you, you can use the stock CX-5 roadside jack to hold one side in place, while you are working on the other side! I do recommend that you leave the fishing wires on the bolts until you have the hitch up in place, and only remove them one at a time, as you are ready to put the nuts and washers on! (I had 2 bolts get knocked up into the frame, and had to make new fishing tools to get the bolts back into place.) I'll be using the new hitch to pull a trailer from Bakersfield, CA. to Eastern Montana. I'm sorry for the quality of the pictures, the camera on the phone is horrid! 408594

FITS 2018 Mazda CX-5 Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class 539196

The price was very affordable, and with free shipping, you can't complain! Good value for the money spent! Even though my CX-5 is only rated to tow 2,000lbs, it's nice to know that my hitch is way stronger than that (it's a class III). It might be overkill for this small of an SUV, but I never have to worry about it failing! It also helped that etrailer sold the wiring kit too, so I was able to get everything I needed to tow my trailer, all in one purchase. Thanks, etrailer! 658927

This was my fourth installation of a hitch from etrailer.com, and as usual, the delivery and installation went smoothly due to a good product and good instructions. I’m using this for my bike rack, which also purchase from etrailer. I did manage to do this myself, using jacks, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Having a second set of hands would make this an easy 15-20 minute job. And aesthetically it’s a good choice, with the only visible part being the hitch tube. This is a good choice for the CX-5. 652882

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Comparing Draw-Tite and Curt Trailer Hitch for 2018 Mazda CX-5
  • The biggest difference between the Draw-Tite # 76138 trailer hitch and the Curt # C13315 trailer hitch that fit your 2018 Mazda CX-5 is the Draw-Tite has a higher tongue weight (675 lbs) and towing (4,500 lbs) capacity than the Curt (600 lbs tongue weight, 4,000 lbs towing). While you should never exceed the towing capacity outlined in your '18 Mazda CX-5's owner's manual I do recommend going the Draw-Tite # 76138 because those capacities speak to its strength and durability. With that in mind, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 76138 for your 2017 Mazda CX-5, which is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver. There are no drawbacks to installing this hitch over its Class II counterpart, the Draw-Tite # 36601, as the Class III offers the flexibility you mentioned and is actually three pounds lighter...

For example, Curt T-Connector # C56377 is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Mazda CX-5, and it could be installed without drilling.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2017 Mazda CX-5
  • A support strap, like part # 18050, is required by warranty on many Curt trailer hitch receivers for non-towing applications. However, the Curt Class III hitch for a 2017 Mazda CX-5, part # C13315, does not have this requirement. I verified with Curt just to be sure. However, using a support strap is never a bad idea for the stability. With that being said, the Draw-Tite Class III, part # 76138 that fits the CX-5, also does not require any drilling. It installs into existing holes...
