Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

I have purchased several hitch receivers from etrailer and all have fit just as described and worked well. If I need another one I will buy from etrailer.

Thanks

This hitch does NOT fit the 2021 Mazda CX-5. While it can be installed, it touches the muffler hangers. This causes a loud rattle in the car when you go over a bump. I talked to e-trailer about this and they recommended bending the muffler hangers or modifying it in some other way that they could not explain. If you have to modify your vehicle to make something fit, then I don’t think that counts as custom fitting.

This is a simple fix that you can do or a muffler shop can do for you. Please take a look at this help article regarding the issue:

by:

It is okay, but the hitch has a slight negative angle/pitch when vehicle is on a level surface and nothing attached. Maybe the Curt hitch would have been a better option. I did install it with a friend and he like the bolt-threading wires. 2 inch is definitely overkill for the vehicle.

Anthony

9/1/2023

the slight negative angle was due to rubberized body protection at the rear of the frame rail the hitch attaches to. this material must be removed prior to installation, but directionsinstructions made no mention of it. product is fine however, for salty winter areas, I would recommend a hitch that has solid end caps see Curt vs the open end caps on the drawtite version.

by:

The hitch is good: fits well, install was not easy but most require lots of tools including big pry bars and torque wrenches. The receiver appears to have a slight tilt to the left but it's not a problem.

Product Was good and fit perfectly on my car.Installation is super easy as with instructions and videos. This is my first time installing a hitch so initially I struggled as due to lack of help. After a little research and with the help of a friend Installed in 15 Mins(Research and initials trail not counted).Things to remember.
1)Car ramps will help where we can pick from [hardware store].
2)Flat head screwdriver and soap water is super good option for removing Exhaust from hangers.
3)Rubber bushes should be on top hooks and facing front side of the car(Not back side to-wards trunk).
4)Remove one facia screw(plastic clip) for easy adjustment which was not demonstrated in the video but advised in the manual.
5)Better to keep the fish wires of the back bolts to avoid pushing them inside the frame.(C-retention rings will help where manufacturer is not providing).
6)Second person will make the job easy.

Paint Quality is very very poor which is pealing out as mentioned by others in this forum.
Installed my Kuat rack which comes with stabilizer and fits perfect.
yet to test on the roads.

Pics or not so clear.

I couldn’t be any happier with this purchase. The drawtite hitch is solid and is even hidden well beneath the rear bumper, so that’s a plus. It took the mechanics less than 30 minutes to install it since it was a custom hitch. I’ve always wanted a hitch specifically for carriers and bike racks, now I have one and am very satisfied with my purchase. Thank you Etrailer for all of the research you all do and for the very informative site. It cuts my work in half. Here is a photo of my Mazda with hitch installed and an overdrive sports rack hooked to it.

I am very pleased with this product!!! I have not had any issues, it’s been reliable and still looks like a bought it yesterday. Absolutely no rust and since I do not have a carport or garage, it’s constantly exposed to outdoor conditions in Western NC many love this area, it’s temperate rain forest. Anyway, I do not regret purchasing! Love it! I keep a 3- bike rack carrier hooked up at all times bc I ride a lot! Every other day or so. The bike I own is a radrover, so it weighs about 60lbs plus. Also, I have two regular bicycles for cruising, which are lighter, but regardless, the hitch has proven to be strong and durable. One happy customer.

This is a great quality product with excellent installation support that I have come to expect from etrailer! My hitch receiver came with all hardware and ingenious "fish wires" to install this unit making it a simple procedure. For a person like me doing this in my driveway I can say that having an assistant, while not necessary, would make this install much easier. Other suggestions to future installers is that the latest etrailer video for this Draw Tite is a must watch. Additional suggestions are: leave all 4 rubber muffler hangers on the top frame hanger posts, twist the rearward pair to point to the front of the car before mounting the unit and have a deep and shallow (standard depth) 19mm or 3/4 inch socket for your torque wrench since room is limited.

Very happy with this purchase. Installation was easy with the very helpful instructions. It's well designed and blends into the rest of the vehicle very well. Our hitch has been installed for a year and looks as good as new.

by:
2014 Mazda CX-5

Seems good to go. I wish they showed to keep the rear exhaust hangers on the frame side in their tutorial. I installed it and noticed I wouldn't be able to put all the exhaust hangers back without removing the hitch, and putting the rubber hangers on the frame before installing the hitch. You won't be able to do it after install on a 2014 Mazda CX 5

by:

Order process was smooth and delivered in time. Even though the hitch was packed appropriate for the shipment there is a small ding where the paint is gone.

by:

Very easy to install, a second set of hands definitely recommended. Great hitch!

Great! We were rear ended and the top hitch held up magnificently. The rear frame rails bent in from the force of the other vehicle hitting our tow hitch. The hitch still looks new. Insurance is paying for a new one!

@Ryan We're glad to hear you're happy with the hitch but I'd be nervous towing with the vehicle after the frame rails were bent....

by:

This hitch was easy to install with the video instructions etrailer provided. I did not have to jack my Mazda CX-5 but the wheels are 19-inch. It was helpful to have someone to help hold the hitch in place while tightening the fasteners. Leaving the rear rubber hangers on the top while facing them forward was a good tip I saw in other reviews. I also ordered a bike rack that was just as easy to put together. Very satisfied with this company.

by:

Great trailer hitch! Strong and well crafted. Perfect for our 5 bike rack, and could clearly handle a trailer or other heavy load. Instructional video was clear and comprehensive. And it looks great. Based on this experience, this is a quality company that takes pride in providing quality products. My compliments to the staff.

by:

Easy to find the right product. Easy to install. Took less than 1/2 hour. Measure the distance of the bolt holes on the hitch to make sure you are using the correct holes in the rails.

2021 Mazda CX-5

2021 Mazda CX 5 Installation Review: Overall, the installation was pretty easy and straightforward. The installation video on etrailer was more than enough to install the hitch at home. All you need is an extra pair of hands to hold the hitch in place when bolting. Installation can be done without the use of jack stands. My only complaint(reason for 4 stars) with the product is the ECoat and Powdercoat. It already peeled off on a couple of trim edges

by:
2023 Mazda CX-5

The powder coating had runs in the finish. The cardboard shipping box wasnt strong enough or packed with enough support material, the hitch ripped through the box on the upper right corner and took a chunk out of the powder coating.
Other wise it was great.

by:
2020 Mazda CX-5

Went in easy as excepted, did it with the car on the ground. I used a ratchet strap around the exhaust to the springs to hold the exhaust up which worked well Ans it was study enough I could rest the receiver on the muffler. The only hang up was our Mazda had an extra set of holes in the rail and the directions led me to put the bolts in the wrong ones which I didn’t realize until I was holding it up in place cursing at it. Just has to drop it and move the bolts over and it was all fine. With a 1/2” socket with extension I didn’t need a universal to get the bolts tight.

Last cranky bit, I didn’t realize it wasn’t made in the States. It must have been the only one that wasn’t. I would have paid the bit more for it. Supporting American labor. Oh well.

by:

This arrived in the promised timeframe and with all of the parts needed for assembly. Watching the installation videos ahead of time made this quite easy to install. It took an hour to do it. No issues and the hitch looks great. Let's pack up some bikes now!

by:
Mazda

The installation guide and online videos were excellent. I was able to install the hitch by myself without any issues. I installed in on a Mazda CX5 SUV, so it had enough clearance to get it done without raising the wheels or body. I mainly use the hitch for a cargo carrier to haul branches and yard waste. I also use the hitch for a bike rack. Works great.

by:

Seems like good construction overall, but pretty unhappy that it isn't level (verified off the vehicle) so anything we put on the receiver is also not level. The weld on top of the receiver has already started rusting (well, started at 1 month and now is getting worse).

Etrailer Expert

5/23/2023

It is common that the hitch receiver can be 2 to 3 degrees off level. Would you be able to send a picture of your receiver? How much off level do you think that it is? What I recommend to help combat the rust is using a rust resistant paint to touch up the hitch. It is normal to see as the hitch experiences nicks and scratches from road debris.

by:

Fairly simple installation with clear instructions. Took me about an hour doing the install alone. Didn't need to lift the car off the ground, and I used a jack to lift the hitch while I bolted it down. Hardest part was torqueing down the bolts. My torque wrench was relatively short, so I needed to assemble my own version of a breaker bar to get the bolts tightened to specifications. All in all, very impressed with the part, installation, and price!

by:
2023 Mazda CX-5

Fit and finish are great. Install was fairly easy as instructions and videos from eTrailer.com are very good. Price was 1/3 of the factory hitch.

by:

Fit and installation tools were excellent. I have had a professional hitch installer do my vehicles previously....but this was much less expensive with as good or better quality.

  • Weight Capacity for Hitch to Use with Bike Rack on 2018 Mazda CX-5
Based on my research it does look like your 2018 Mazda CX-5 features a tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds.
