Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Mazda CX-5 - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Mazda CX-5, we're going to be taking a look at, and I'll show you how to install the Draw-Tite Class III Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76138. This is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. You can see the cross tube is completely hidden behind the bumper fascia. The only thing we're really going to see is the receiver tube. The receiver tube is nice and tucked in underneath the outer edge of the bumper fascia, so we're not going to have to worry about hitting our legs, or our shins on it when we're loading and unloading the vehicle. This is going to be a Class III hitch. It's going to be 2" x 2", this hole here is going to be your hitch pin hole.

It's going to be 5/8" in diameter and take a standard 5/8" hitch pin and clip. Now the pin and clip does not come with your hitch however you can find one here at etrailer.com using part number PC3. This most rear hole here this is for a J-pin stabilization device only. What that does is take the shake and play out of any of your hitch mount accessories. We're going to have rolled steel style safety chain loops. As you can see it gives us plenty of room for different sized hooks.

We're going have a nice reinforced collar to give us a little extra stability on our receiver tube. As far as weight capacity goes we at about 675 max tongue weight, which is the downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube and a 4,500 pound max trailer weight. Which is the trailer plus the load included. I do recommend checking the owner's manual of the vehicle to make sure the vehicle can withstand that amount of weight. You want to go with the lowest number between the vehicle and the hitch. Now let's give you a few measurements to help you when deciding on any hitch mount accessories you may need.

From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper is going to be about 3". From the ground to the top innermost part of the receiver tube is going to be about 12 1/2". Now let's show you how to get this installed. The first thing we need to do to start our installation we're going to have two plastic pushpin fasteners that are holding on this plastic piece. We need to remove those. Take a flathead screwdriver, we'll pry out the center, and we'll get the base with it.

We're going to have some little tabs we need to push and pull down, and they're right here. Next we need to lower our exhaust. We're going to start by using a safety strap. You can hang it from anywhere. I like to hang it from the springs because they are easily accessible. Run it underneath the exhaust pipe. We're going to have four rubber hangers we need to remove. We're going to have one on each side here, on the passenger's side and you're going to have two on the driver's side. Spray them with a little bit of lubricant.Take a crow bar, or a pry bar, I'm just going to pry one end off and do that same thing with the remaining three. Next we're going to take our pull wire, a carriage bolt, spacer block. We're going to be using, you see two holes here that are close together, we're going to be using this most forward one and this large hole in the back. Our hardware is going to have to go through here and come out here.So we're going to do this, we're going to take our pull wire and put a little bend in it like that and we're going feed that spring in through that hole and we'll come out this one, like that. Feed on your spacer block, thread your carriage bolt and pull down like that. For our next one go ahead and put your two pieces of hardware together thread on your pull wire and we're going to do a reverse feed. We're going to take the bolt first, stick it up in the hole and then we'll put our spacer block in and pull it back down. We're going to repeat that same process on the other side of the vehicle.Next thing we want to do is our very back hangers here, we want to pull them all the way off and hang them on the rods on the underside of the vehicle because there's not enough space between our hitch and our hanger here to get this back on. I'll take our hitch and go up over the top of our exhaust feed my pull wires to the corresponding holes, go ahead and remove the pull wire and put on a conical tooth washer, make sure the teeth are facing up toward the hitch and then the nut. Go ahead and get one of those in on each side to help hold the hitch in place while you install your remaining hardware.Next we'll take a 3/4" socket and tighten all of our hardware. Next you're going to torque all your hardware to the specifications in the instructions. Now we'll put our exhaust back into place. Once you've reinstalled your exhaust you can remove your safety strap and you're ready to go.That will do it for a look at and installation on a Draw-Tite Class III Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76138 on our 2018 Mazda CX-5.

Product Was good and fit perfectly on my car.Installation is super easy as with instructions and videos. This is my first time installing a hitch so initially I struggled as due to lack of help. After a little research and with the help of a friend Installed in 15 Mins(Research and initials trail not counted).Things to remember. 1)Car ramps will help where we can pick from [hardware store]. 2)Flat head screwdriver and soap water is super good option for removing Exhaust from hangers. 3)Rubber bushes should be on top hooks and facing front side of the car(Not back side to-wards trunk). 4)Remove one facia screw(plastic clip) for easy adjustment which was not demonstrated in the video but advised in the manual. 5)Better to keep the fish wires of the back bolts to avoid pushing them inside the frame.(C-retention rings will help where manufacturer is not providing). 6)Second person will make the job easy. Paint Quality is very very poor which is pealing out as mentioned by others in this forum. Installed my Kuat rack which comes with stabilizer and fits perfect. yet to test on the roads. Pics or not so clear. 519916

The trailer hitch fit well onto the frame of the Mazda CX-5. It was a little difficult to install by myself. Really would have been much easier with two people. But etrailer did not indicate that it was a one-man job. It's obvious that it is a well built trailer hitch - Strong, heavy, and as I said before, fit well. The instructions which came with it did not seem all that helpful. Not sure if I could have installed the hitch if that were the only information I had. Fortunately, there were various videos I was able to find through YouTube and on the etrailer site which were closely related to my situation. 483458

Ive only needed to use it a few times in the year that I had it. But it has always worked fine without issue. The paint has also held up well. No problems.

Got my hitch yesterday afternoon for my 2018 Mazda CX-5 my friend and I install it at his garage, literally took us about a half an hour. Great product will make, I was very happy with it. The video on the website make it very easy to install thank you etrailer. Highly recommended. Sorry no pictures, but it looks great just like the video. 567312

DrawTite trailer hitch fit my CX-5 as advertised. Installation was very straight forward particularly due to the installation videos available on the etrailer web site. The Tekonsha wiring harness was simple to install once all of the interior trim was removed; something the etrailer video made easy. When I decided to purchase a trailer I knew that I'd have to get a hitch for my vehicle. Since I do not routinely pull trailers I knew little about hitches and the other components associated with them. After looking around online I found etrailers.com. I called customer service and was connected to a very helpful person named Chedi. He explained the products available and what I'd need for my particular setup. My purchasing experience with etrailers was very good; from ordering, to receiving, to the installation. Thank you etrailers. 574870

The hitch is great functionally, seems very solid and does what it’s supposed to do. It’s not very difficult to install and on the CX-5 it looks great without sticking out too much. What bothers me is the manufacturer’s claim that “The combination of an e-coat base and a powder coat finish provides excellent rust protection”. This is far from truth. The top coat started bubbling and peeling off and the hitch started rusting after less than 2 months after installation before even seeing any snow (see attached picture). I understand if this happened after a long and heavy winter but that was not the case. I’m not impressed with the top coat quality at all. 557444

As usual etrailer made sure my Draw-Tite hitch arrived quickly to my door step. While the item was packaged nicely, It was a little disappointing to see multiple chips in the powder coating upon opening it up. While the chips will make no difference in the performance of the hitch, it was a little frustrating. Draw-Tite makes a quality product and I can't wait to get it installed. I would have given the hitch 5 stars if it wasn't for the powder coating chips. 466639

Purchased for a 2018 Mazda CX 5. Hitch fit well. Important to leave rear rubber muffler hangers on top hanger; push all the way back in once you have the muffler off. Not enough space between hitch and muffler hanger, to get back on, if you don't. Rear threshold panel comes off like every other year, but side panels have one push button trim tab on each side, then two trim pops along rear hatch sides(see pictures), 1 screw in hold down latches, and in front, each side. Bolts on hold downs, back left and right and in the front. Trim will pop right off, but I only moved it out enough to work. On passenger side, push trim in place first before pushing in the seat latch. It has a pop attachment on it. There is a grommet on the left side that you can run a power wire through and a good ground bolt. The 2018, has full undercover and that has to be removed to run the wire up to the battery. Takes pictures before you start. It was a real pain, but that is what I started and finished. The trailer harness could have been about 6 inches longer. It doesn't quite reach the hitch and I stuck the power module as far back on the left side, as I could. Everything looks good and it works, but it took me, working by myself, a lot longer than the times listed.. 473732

After one year and many miles of towing and carrying a rear rack, this hitch has worked well. I especially like the J pin stabilizer pin that I use with it. It keeps the tow bar and ball solid so there it no rattle. Well worth the extra cost.

It works great. I have only used it for a platform and that worked well on our long trip from PA to Honduras. This is not a fault of the hitch but we did scrape some speed bumps in Guatemala. I have never seen such nasty speed bumps. 10 mph is too fast. The instructions for routing the lighting wires were a little vague, possibly generic for more than one model but we got the lighting installed. I have not had to use them though. 572011

Great product. I watched the video to walk me through the install. Found that by just forcing a short dowel rod to push the rubber exhaust mounts off their pins worked better than prying them off. This item would be perfect if the rear corners we're cut at a 45 degree angle instead of square cut. A 45 degree cut eliminates the need to bend the bumper facia to slide the hitch to it's mounting position. I mounted a 2x2 on my floor jack, which gave me a second set of hands to lift the hitch in place. Now to grab a bike rack! 552643

I was happy that the product was packaged very professionally. Sometimes when you order a hunk of steel like this, the seller just wraps the ends and puts it on a truck and it gets scratched and dinged. The product was delivered in a sturdy etrailer box. Installation was on a 2014 cx-5. I chose to remove the muffler, which took about ten minutes. The hardest part of installation was getting the rear exhaust hangers back on. 1 hour total for me. The product itself is very sturdy...it is a big chunk of metal. Note that the towing capacity of my cx-5 is much lower than what this hitch is rated for. My reasoning for getting a 2 inch hitch was so that I could swap the hitch mount bike rack between my vehicles, and there are more used 2 inch bike rack options out there on craigslist than 1.25... just a tip. Dont plan on pulling much more with your CX-5 than some bikes or maybe a very small trailer. 451139

I haven't used the hitch yet but installation was pretty straight forward. I used the video and it took me 1 1/2 hours to get everything done, but it could be much quicker for someone with all the right tools who knew what they were doing. I didn't have jack stands to raise the car so I pulled the passenger side of the car up onto a curb to at least give some extra room on one side. I used a large screw driver to get the rubber things which hold the muffler system off. Holding the hitch up while screwing on the bolts was a bit tricky but my wife and I got under the car and I held it up while she screwed on the bolts. Make sure you wear eye glasses so you don't get junk in your eye! I was able to use the torque wrench to tighten the forward bolts appropriately but I didn't have the right size extension to use it on the rear bolts so I just used a ratchet to tighten it as much as I could. I'm only using it for a bike rack so I'm not worried. 416888

FITS 2018 Mazda CX-5 Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class 539196

I installed the hitch on a 2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring. The trailer hitch installed as described in the instructions and as shown in the video. However, reinstalling the muffler was a different story. I left the rubber hangers on the vehicle as shown in the video and as recommended by others. The front rubber hangers were easy to install. However, the side rails of the hitch prevent the "rear" rubber hangers from moving to the side which is necessary when installing the metal hanger pin into the rubber hanger's hole. There is a hole in the side rails that allows very limited movement of the metal pin but no movement of the rubber hanger which is required to get the last hanger installed. I was able to get one side in easily but attaching the other "rear" isolator took an inordinate amount of time, effort and forcing. I would not recommend this particular hitch if there is another option available. Other than the muffler installation, the hitch fits well. One point I would make about the hitch construction, the hitch is rated for and built for over twice my vehicles rated towing capacity. Building a hitch with metal thickness and strength three times that of the frame that it is attached to, provides no additional benefit but adds significantly more weight than is needed. With today's vehicles, 20 unnecessary pounds does make a difference. The video for installation of the harness was for a 2016 and the interior trim panels of my 2017 are completely different so I may wait till I can find a video on the 2017 model. 436592

The product works good as expected, I'm not one to hold a grudge but my experience with etrailer was less than spectacular, the hardware/mounting kit was not in the box when I received the hitch and it took 3 weeks for them to get me a replacement hardware kit and that was still missing parts... several emails and phonecalls were needed to get a product that I could install and use. probably won't be a return customer. 574590

2017 Mazda CX5 -Purchased for hauling bikes/bike rack -Reasons for purchase over other hitches: Good instructions and video , I was confident this would fit my vehicle. Price. No Modifications to vehicle other than removing small trim piece. 2” is more versatile and can be used for other/bigger things in the future. Can be upgraded with wiring to tow larger things like trailers/campers. Can easily be Removed if no longer needed/wanted/sold. Product arrived promptly. Installation took approx 60minutes from taking it out of the box in my garage with NO jacks/ramps/lifts. I had my 13 year old son help for a few minutes to hold one side as I lifted it into place. Recommended Tools are a MUST. Disappointed that out of the box the paint was already flaking off! I did not bother complaining or returning....because after all this is going UNDER A Car.... BUT....the paint Should Survive Shipping! 503157

Delivery and product were excellent. With the helpful videos, installation was straightforward. I realize the item description said a part may be needed to be cut for the 2017 Mazda CX-5 GT model, but it would have been nice to have a custom made hitch fit perfectly without discarding a piece of the plastic under the bumper. There is a strip of plastic that needs to be removed and discarded with a flathead screwdriver for the hitch to fit on the GT model. Besides that, everything was of great quality and craftsmanship. After reading other reviews, I listened to others and left the rubber exhaust hangers on the top hooks, on the car, rather than on the exhaust itself. One thing to add was when I rotated the hanger to make installing the hitch easier, I rotated it back towards the rear, which I later learned took a little effort rotating it all the way forward and down to reattach the exhaust. I should have rotated the oval hanger forward, towards the front, which would have taken no effort rotating back down to reattach the exhaust. Don't know if that makes any sense, but I'll attach some photos for reference. 417989

Fine hitch, very sturdy. Arrived super quick from etrailer. Mounts slightly recessed from bumper with no bumper cuts necessary. Bought to use with single 1UP USA bike rack and the combo is rock solid with my 2017 Mazda CX-5 GT. Was worried that need to insert the rack 4+" into hitch receiver might not allow rack to clear the bumper when in its fold up position. etrailer looked at schematic and assured me it would. They were right! No issues. My only advice, if you plan to use the 1UP double rack AND keep it on the car all the time, you might choose a hitch that extends about .5" further out. This would allow the hatch door to clear the double rack in full fold up position and stay within 1UP insertion requirements. The door easily clears the single rack. Tried it with a 1UP add on (turning my single rack into a double) in full vertical fold up and was surprised to find it almost cleared as well when right at the minimum insertion! Anyway, fine hitch, thanks etrailer! 406513

Installation was pretty straight forward, but I did have to bend the rear upper hangers of the exhaust, so they could clear the mounting brackets for the hitch. Be sure to watch the video on this site!!! It will give some good pointers!!! Particularly where to put the "rubbers" for the rear exhaust mounts!! (HINT: Leave them on the car's hangers! Once the hitch is in place, you can not access two of the hangers!!) If you have no one to help you, you can use the stock CX-5 roadside jack to hold one side in place, while you are working on the other side! I do recommend that you leave the fishing wires on the bolts until you have the hitch up in place, and only remove them one at a time, as you are ready to put the nuts and washers on! (I had 2 bolts get knocked up into the frame, and had to make new fishing tools to get the bolts back into place.) I'll be using the new hitch to pull a trailer from Bakersfield, CA. to Eastern Montana. I'm sorry for the quality of the pictures, the camera on the phone is horrid! 408594

This thing is heavy duty, excellent quality. I'm only using it for a bike rack but if you're going to tow a trailer this is the one you want. I watched the install video and it was very simple. I did use a floor jack as I did it alone. I ordered it on Monday late afternoon and it arrived on Thursday. Very happy, exceeded my expectations and looks great. 422155

I've had the hitch for a year now and I just inspected it; no sign of any rust and the bolts are as tight as the day installed. The reciever is well manufactured and I've never had any noise issues, but I've also always used an anti-rattle J-Pin. I can easily reccommend this hitch to others. The hitch is an "under bumper" and except for the reciever it's hidden from view which I like. But, being so low to the ground there are some things to be aware of. First, because the hitch is low, when I'm towing the boat I need a riser to keep the trailer/boat level (I use an adjustable one). The other problem is I also use the hitch for a "wide" cargo basket and as the hitch is in-line with and close to the exhaust the basket is inline with the hot exhaust - which can easily melt/burn something inside the basket. To circumvent this, when using the basket I use an extender with the riser. It gives me enough distance out and up from the exhaust to not cause issues. 570036

Item was delivered fast and in good condition. Installation went without a problem. Perfect fit for Mazda CX 5 with clear instructions. I am sure than anyone with help and proper tools could easily do it himself, I just can’t do it because I had no help and have no tools so, had to take it to local mechanic’s shop and it took them about 30 min from start to finish. Besides, in case if anyone needs there is a step by step video with installation instructions on their website. Good customer service from etrailer.com, much better than from Amazon. This was my first personal experience with them and can recommend them to anyone and this hitch without hesitation. Thank you. 572708

OK, it's been a year since purchasing the Draw-Tite Max-Frame, 2", Class III, Trailer Hitch Receiver and I just got around to installing it yesterday. I found the unit well built and with the supplied chase wires, the whole deal went easy. I worked alone, lying on the ground. Getting up several times was the only real difficulty as I'm 78, almost 79 ha. I plan on using the hitch to tow a utility trailer and for my bike rack. In the future, I'm hoping to get a small camping trailer within the limits of my Mazda CX-5's capabilities. I was a little surprised to read that this hitch is not recommended for use with a WDH. Not sure why, because it looks sturdy enough. 728968

I am thoroughly impressed with the quality of this hitch for the price. The fit is perfect; it tucks neatly behind the rear fascia and looks just as if it was an OEM installation straight from the factory. And speaking of installation, the pull wires provided for fishing the mounting bolts into place are genius. They made an otherwise impossible task easy-peezy. My only comment is that the instructions called for "lowering and supporting the exhaust system" to make room to install the hitch. I chose to remove the muffler entirely instead, since it was just two easily accessed nuts to take it off. That gave ample room to get the hitch up into place without fighting with a dangling muffler. I installed this hitch on our Mazda CX-5 mostly to accommodate a bike rack, but will probably also use it to move my utility trailer around in the driveway where my full size truck is less agile. 727575

Draw-tite hitch and Curt wire harness are great. Delivery and follow-up from etrailer are excellent. The installation was a 4 hour job by a professional installer. Installation of wiring and connections were hidden from view during the job. I would not recommend this installation to an amateur who does not have a high lift. For the home DIY, this would be an all day, and perhaps longer, process without proper tools and a lift. My Mazda CX_5 Grand Touring did not have the extra trim piece to remove. This made the job a bit easier. All-in-all, I love the products purchased from etrailer. [Thumbs up] 723385

The hitch came with everything we needed other than a socket wrench. The video was straightforward and all the steps went exactly as shown. The job would definitely be easiest done on a lift, if you can find a bay to rent, but ramps worked just fine. We had 3 people helping, one on each side and one holding the hitch when needed, and it went smoothly. 720486

Great product. Quick and easy install (OK -- my friend has a car-lift so we didn't have to crawl under the car. One tip for the CX-5: For the rear exhaust hangers -- leave the hangers on the exhaust /muffler NOT on the car. Once the hitch is installed, there isn't space to get the hangers back on the muffler. (So we got to install the hitch twice! Still it only took a little over an hour). 714198

Easy to install by following the etrailer video! Recommend two people to help raise receiver into place; I didn't have anyone but my 8 year boy so a scissor jack helped raise/hold the heavy receiver. Amazingly tight fit between the muffler, muffler hangers but it fit! So, Drawtite did their homework and made a quality precise receiver! I used Vaseline and screwdriver to pry the hangers back on the muffler. 706328

Ordered, Arrived by UPS in great condition in a box with carry handles and packed with paper. I re-watched the video and paused it at the muffler hangers. I pulled the hitch out of the box and began to undo the muffler hangers and lower it out of the way. I pretty much followed the video step by step as they showed. I had my daughter help me lift it up and under and we started to thread the washer and nuts to the first set of bolts. Again pretty much following the video. We were done in under an hour. Could have been quicker but I was explaining things to her as we went so she could learn a bit. 704619

This product was recommended by etrailer for my CX5. They were super helpful when I emailed them. I bought this model to use it only to attach a bike hitch rack. It came with directions and a bag of nuts bolts and fish line to thread it. The welded portion could have looked better on the hitch. It was put in a big box with two handles and overly stapled. Wish plastic was on entire hitch to protect the paint. Mechanic installed within 30 min 702927

I appreciate that etrailer provides incredible information to help choose the most compatible parts and accessories for my vehicles and purpose. I needed a sturdy receiver hitch and wanted one that showed the minimal appearance distraction. Once I got the hitch, the video instructions for installing the hitch saved me from a good deal of wasted time sorting out what order to take the exhaust down, install hitch and route wiring and restore exhaust. All in all, I saved a substantial amount of money doing it myself and never felt frustrated by lack of specific experience. Stress-free experience. 699896

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Comparing Draw-Tite and Curt Trailer Hitch for 2018 Mazda CX-5
  • The biggest difference between the Draw-Tite # 76138 trailer hitch and the Curt # C13315 trailer hitch that fit your 2018 Mazda CX-5 is the Draw-Tite has a higher tongue weight (675 lbs) and towing (4,500 lbs) capacity than the Curt (600 lbs tongue weight, 4,000 lbs towing). While you should never exceed the towing capacity outlined in your '18 Mazda CX-5's owner's manual I do recommend going the Draw-Tite # 76138 because those capacities speak to its strength and durability. This hitch...

  • What Underbody Trim Piece Needs to be Removed to Install Trailer Hitch on 2018 Mazda CX-5 GT
  • If you take a look at the accompanying photo, which was sent in by a customer, you can see the part that needs to be removed when installing a trailer hitch like the Draw-Tite # 76138 (which has a 2" receiver) or the Draw-Tite # 36601 (which has a 1-1/4" receiver) on your 2018 Mazda CX-5 GT. This is just a strip of plastic that will not impact your CX-5 at all. It can be taken off with just a flathead screwdriver and you'll be set. Otherwise the installation of the trailer hitches...

  • Comparing Curt 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver to Other Options for 2018 Mazda CX-5
  • That is a great question. Our pricing reflects the manufacturer pricing and many other factors at any given time. If you are interested in that Curt hitch, then I recommend the etrailer.com hitch which is identical to that hitch with the difference being the powder coat color. The # C13315 is gloss black and the # e98902 is the matte black carbide finish. Your other option for the higher rated capacities is the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76138 which has a slightly...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring
  • You're smart to want the flexibility of a 2 inch hitch receiver; that will offer you many more options in terms of accessories than the smaller 1-1/4 inch receiver. With that in mind, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 76138 for your 2017 Mazda CX-5, which is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver. There are no drawbacks to installing this hitch over its Class II counterpart, the Draw-Tite # 36601, as the Class III offers the flexibility you mentioned and is actually three pounds lighter...

  • Is there a Difference in the Trailer Hitches for a 2016 and 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring
  • The announced differences between the 2016 and 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 would not affect fit. The hitch fits are actually the same (for the most part) for both 2016 and 2016.5 models. For example Draw-Tite hitch # 76138 fits both. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip,...

  • Can Wiring Harness be Installed After Hitch on 2017 Mazda CX-5?
  • To answer your first question, yes, you would be able to install wiring after you have put in Draw-Tite # 76138. In regards to your second question, the answer is it depends on the harness. For example, Curt T-Connector # C56377 is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Mazda CX-5, and it could be installed without drilling.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2017 Mazda CX-5
  • A support strap, like part # 18050, is required by warranty on many Curt trailer hitch receivers for non-towing applications. However, the Curt Class III hitch for a 2017 Mazda CX-5, part # C13315, does not have this requirement. I verified with Curt just to be sure. However, using a support strap is never a bad idea for the stability. With that being said, the Draw-Tite Class III, part # 76138 that fits the CX-5, also does not require any drilling. It installs into existing holes...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Mazda CX-5
  • The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2018 Mazda CX-5 is the Draw Tite part # 76138 because it has a 2 inch hitch opening (most accessories are made for this size), it has plenty of towing capacity, and because it has a hidden crosstube which makes it a bit less visible too. See picture. I also attached an install video for the hitch. The exhaust pipes won't even have to go as low as the bottoms of the tires so with the vehicle up even higher, in this case on ramps, you will have more than enough room. • Yes, you can carry the Maxxtow Motorcycle Carrier part # MT70101 with your 2019 Mazda CX-5 but the hitch you'll want is the Draw Tite part # 76138 because it has a higher tongue weight capacity and does not require a stabilizer strap when carrying a non-supported load like a motorcycle carrier like the Curt hitch does. The main takeway, I think you need to be concerned with is the gross combined vehicle rating (GCWR). I think you can simplify it by using the GCWR which the manual states...

Not only does it cut the weight rating of your trailer hitch in half, it will also cause your bike rack to have more movement during travel.
