Question:

So I see a previously asked question already answered saying this hitch can allow for only 2 bikes. However I see that this hitch is rated for 200 lbs tongue weight. Which is twice of the competitor Curt hitch, and that hitch allows for max 2 bikes. So shouldn’t this hitch allow for 4 bikes each weighing around 25 lbs and still be safely under the max limit? Unless I am missing something about the 200 lb rating.

The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24956 for your 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV does indeed have a 200 lb max tongue weight rating however, the hitch is almost always rated for more weight than the vehicle can handle. In addition to weight capacity, the maximum number of bikes that can be loaded on a Class I hitch is 2 and since they only make a Class I hitch for your vehicle, you will be limited to 2 bikes. The reason for the 2 bike maximum has more to do with leverage than it does weight.

The only way to carry 4 bikes on your vehicle would involve placing 2 bikes on a hitch bike rack like the Thule Doubletrack Pro XT Bike Rack part # TH92BJ and the other 2 bikes on the roof using the SeaSucker Mini Bomber part # 298-BM2006.
