Can you Upgrade Leaf Springs for Increased Ground Clearance on a Trailer
Published 01/25/2018 >
Question:
I need to upgrade my leaf springs on my camping trailer for ground clearance for offroad use axle mounted under the spring. From my research, it seems more robust than blocks, flips, or shackles. If I use an over capacity leaf spring 4000 lb on a 3000 lb trailer that is usually more like 2000 lb, will it be too stiff and too rough a ride and damage my trailer, especially offroad? Thank you.

Using a leaf spring with a capacity higher than what the manufacturer of your trailer recommends will cause a very stiff and rough ride. A higher rated leaf spring pack is not what I would recommend to increase ground clearance.
In order to retain ride quality and support while also gaining ground clearance, I recommend installing taller leaf spring hangers since you mentioned that your leaf springs are already positioned above the axle. In order to recommend a taller leaf spring hanger I would need to know the width of your existing leaf springs and height of your hangers. In order to recommend the correct replacement leaf springs I would need to know the length of your existing springs, axle capacity, and type of spring you have i.e. double-eye or slipper.
I have attached our leaf spring hanger and leaf spring selection for you as well.
