Snow Chains for 2015 Ford Explorer Sport With 255/50R-20 Tires

Published 01/05/2018

Question:

I just purchased a new Ford Explorer Sport with the expectation to drive it into the Pacific Northwest Mountains for skiing. I just had new Toyo Observe Studless Snow Tires mounted and when I asked for a set of snow chains they asked to read the owners manual and it states chains not allowed due to lack of clearance. After my shock wore off, I realized, there are many time in the mountains the State police will post Chains required beyond this pointinch on major roads to the ski areas or even over the coast range to the beach. I appreciate your recommendation to a set of tire chains that will fit my 255/50R-20 inch tires that will allow us to enjoy our winter fun. Thanks for your help.

I took a look at the owners manual for the 2015 Ford Explorer and it does specifically state that 255/50R-20 tires should not use snow traction devices with your Explorer. Your situation is a common one in that you might be legally required to use a traction device but the manufacturer says it is not allowed. The choice for how you proceed is yours, though if you do decide to use a traction device be sure to use something which is Class S compatible like the Titan # TC3010 which will give you the most clearance and possibly help you avoid damaging your vehicle.
