Adding electric brakes to a 3500-lb trailer axle is a straightforward process that is outlined in the linked article. This recaps each of the considerations and items needed to install electric drum brakes on your axle.
The items required include a brake flange on the spindle, the brakes themselves, hub/drums, wiring, a breakaway kit like # 20099 and a trailer brake controller like the excellent Prodigy P2 # 90885. Brake controller installation varies by vehicle; some vehicles with a factory 7-way will have a connection port under the dash that makes connection a simple plug-in process, but we also have installation kit # ETBC7 for vehicles that require hardwired installation.
Our range of 10 x 2-1/4-inch electric drum brakes is shown on the linked page. We have Dexter, TruRyde and etrailer's high-value brake kits made by Axle Tek, such as part # AKEBRK-35-SA. This is a pair of left- and right-hand electric drum brakes suitable for a 3500-lb axle that is compatible with wheel sizes from 13- to 15-inches.
You will need to pull one of your idler hubs to find the bearing part numbers. The drums you install need to use the very same inner and outer bearings in order to fit correctly on your spindles. They also need to match the axle weight rating and the wheels' bolt pattern. Our hubs come complete with bearings, races and seals. All of our 3500-lb-rated drums use inner bearing # L68149 and outer bearing # L44649.
