Why Curt Does Hitch for 2016 Fiat 500x Have Different Capacity than Vehicle

Question:

The hitch says 3500lbs towing capacity but online i see the car is 2400lbs towing capacity. Does this hitch increase the towing capacity of the car? or is it still 2400 lbs?

Expert Reply:

With any towing setup you are limited by the lowest rated component as the overall towing capacity. In your situation you'd be limited by the vehicle at 2,400 lbs.

Draw Tite designed and tested the part # C13271 that you referenced and found that it had a capacity of 3,500 lbs total trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight. That is just for the hitch by itself.

Now Fiat came up with their own towing capacity for your vehicle that happens to be lower than the hitch.
