Expert Reply:
Trailer light sockets, such as those intended for a 921-type bulb like # 30-90-021 do use friction to hold the bulb in place in the receptacle. This can mean that a new bulb may present a fairly snug fit. You might try using dielectric grease like # LT37534 to both protect the socket and bulb contacts from potential corrosion and to act as something of a lubricant for installation.
You can also check that there is nothing from the original bulb base still inserted in the socket. It can happen that when the old bulb is removed the base can snap off and stay stuck in the receptacle, making it all but impossible to get the new one installed.
