Question:
Hi, I recently just installed a trailer hitch to my 2008 ford escape and now need to hook up a wire harness. My vehicle does have the wiring adapter underneath to connect to the part # 118251. I understand I would have to purchase the 3 TR38665 relays and thats fine. However, I wasnt sure if I was going to waste my money and have it not work. I understand the #118551 is a more complete option, but saving 20 would sure go a long way and much less work would be needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can most certainly install the Tekonsha Tow Package Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector # 118251. Since you do not have the factory tow package you will simply need to order 3 Tow Ready Relays # TR38665 (this part comes in quantity of 1) and install them to activate the 4-Pole trailer connector. You will want to make sure that the spots where you install the relays (located under the hood - see attached video) have the metal pins. Please note that the Tekonsha # 118251 is not compatible with vehicles that have backup sensors.
If those locations do not have the metal pins then the other option that you mentioned, part # 118551, will be the electrical kit you want to go with. It completely bypasses the wiring on your 2008 Ford Escape by drawing power directly from the battery via the Black wire lead and T's into the tail lights on your Escape. The lights on your Escape will basically tell the 4-Pole connector when to pull a little power from the battery and send it to the correct pin.
I have attached installation videos for each product for you to review as well.
