Question:
I have a 2010 Toyota Rav4. I installed a Curt 4 pole plugpart # C56165 on my vehicle. Now I am buying a small utility trailer with an electric brake and need to convert my 4 pole to something that can operate an electric brake. I plan on purchasing a brake controller, but need to know if the 7 way Curt installation kit part #C57186 is the correct wiring kit to purchase for an electric brake. Also, is the only difference between part #C57186 and part # ETBC7 if I wanted access to both 4 pole and 7 and if so couldnt I just unplug part #C57186 if I wanted 4 pole only? Thank you.

You are exactly correct in that you can use either the Curt Installation Kit # C57186 or the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7 to install a brake controller and fully functional 7-Way from the 4-Way you already have installed. These are both universal 7-Way kits that will work on your 2010 RAV4.
Between the two kits, I actually recommend going with the # ETBC7. This is because unlike the Curt Kit, this will include a circuit tester to help with installation, along with a bracket to attach the connector to your trailer hitch. As you referenced, the 4 pole and 7 way connector will also allow for a bit more versatility if you ever need to tow a trailer that uses a 4-way connector.
I have attached an installation video on the 2011 RAV4 that you can use for reference along with a detailed article that explains all of the steps needed to install the kit.
