Parts Needed to Rebuild Suspension and Axle Placement on Gooseneck Trailer

Updated 05/19/2017 | Published 05/18/2017

Question:

I am rebuilding a stock trailer that is 262inch long from coupler to the rear of the trailer with the box section being 199. The springs, hangers and hardware are shot. Under further inspection I found that someone has welded the hangers out of square from one side to the other plus have the axles mounted under the springs making the trailer taller than it should be. Whomever built the trailer used 1-1/2inch hangers front/rear an 2-1/2inch in the center which doesnt leave any room for movement. The springs on it have two different measurements one is 25-1/2inch an the other is 26inch eye to eye with 3-1/8_ straps at the equalizer which is 8inch by 4-1/2inch this leaves the rear eye only 1-1/2inch from the frame and the front eye only 2inch from the frame. Can you tell me what would be the best an correct setup for my trailer using 6k springs with the existing 2inch square axles? An where should be the proper axle placement?

Helpful Expert Reply:

To start with, the 6,000 pound springs I suggest are # e34SR. They're 25-1/4 inch long, 5 leaf springs. I recommend either hanger kit # APT3 or # APT5 with the springs. The difference between the two hanger kits is the height of the hangers.

With either kit it's recommended to space the hangers 29-1/2 inches apart and the axles 33-1/2 inches apart. See the diagram I attached.

You'll need to position the axles so that 10 percent of the trailer's total weight is on the tongue. I attached a second diagram showing the formula on how to determine the proper positioning.

Before welding or torqueing anything you'll want to mock up the entire setup and make sure it's where you want it to be.
