Question:
Hello, I purchased the 75270 trailer hitch for my 2014 Honda Odyssey and intend to use for carrying bikes. Im purchasing a 4 bike carrier. I get a little confused with towing max wt and max tongue wt. What is the maximum weight of bikes that i could carry? Is it max tongue wt 675 lbs?

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 75270 for your 2014 Honda Odyssey has a maximum tongue weight of 675 pounds. However, you will be limited by the lowest rated component. So you'll need to check your owner's manual and determine what your van's capacities are as well.
In addition, and probably the most limiting factor, will be the bike rack itself. For example, one of the most popular bike racks for the Odyssey is the Thule Hitching Post Pro # TH934XTR. It's a 4-bike rack that will carry bikes up to 35 pounds each. So you can only put 140 pounds on the rack. The rack itself weighs less than 40 pounds so if you fully load the Hitching Post Pro you'll only have about 180 pounds of tongue weight on your hitch. The hitch can support this easily.
If the bike rack you choose is a hanging bike rack that carries the bikes by the horizontal cross tube then you may need an adapter bar. A bike frame adapter bar, like the Kuat Ubar # UB01, creates that horizontal cross tube for bikes that don't have one, like a women's or children's bike. This way the bikes will be carried level on the rack.
