Updated 10/05/2016 | Published 10/04/2016

Question:

I have a 2013 terrain denali awd that I want to use the Hopkins harness to wire up for towing. However Im a little confused by the connections required because my stop and tail lights are one in the same. Also the brake lights come on without the mkey turned on. Please help.

You are correct that your tail and brake lights are on one circuit. Your vehicle has combined wiring, and all of the wires run to a single socket in the tail light housing. The Hopkins Wiring Kit # HM56108 connects behind the tail lights of your 2013 GMC Terrain and lets you wire it to accept the tail, brake, and turn signal functions of your RV. I've attached a video showing the installation onto a 2015 Terrain which is a similar process to yours.

Since your brake lights come on without the key you are also going to likely need a brake light relay # RM-88400. This will keep the Terrain's brake lights from overriding the turn signals from the motorhome when they're both being used.

Your Terrain is required by law to have working tail, brake, and turn signal lights just as if it was being driven.
