How Level Does Trailer Need To Be Using Weight Distribution

Published 07/19/2016

Question:

I purchased the equalizer hitch for my TT on a 2015 GMC Yukon with towing package. I have the hitch setup on the lowest possible with the standard shank that came with the unit. Once the rear air shocks level out, I believe the trailer is tilted slightly up. 1. How important is it to have trailer completely level? 2. I have unplugged fuse to auto level and the car seems to be level once hooked up 3. If i need to purchase a shank, which one should I get knowing I just need to be down one more setting? Thanks

It's really going to depend on how far out of level you are. If you're within an inch or two of level, especially if it's nose-high, you'll be just fine. Turning off the auto-leveling system is not a bad ideal, if it keeps the rear of the vehicle at the correct ride height so the trailer tows level, or nearly level.

Keep in mind-when you tow, you'll likely have cargo in the rear of your Yukon, which would likely cause the rear to squat a bit more than it is now. This will likely put the trailer right about at level.

If you find that adding your cargo in the Yukon and shutting off the load leveling system still leaves the trailer more than 1-1/2 inches above level, then you can go with a shank that has a lower drop.

Your system came with a shank that offers a maximum drop of 3 inches. Equalizer offers shanks with different maximum drops:

4 inch drop, part # EQ90-02-4800
6 inch drop, part # EQ90-02-4300
9 inch drop, part # EQ90-02-4400
