Determining The Correct Drop Shank For An Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Hitch
Updated 10/09/2023 | Published 10/04/2023 >
Question:
Kevin, Sorry, another question. 2 questions. 1) Ever have one of those weekends where nothing goes right despite your best effort? 2) I got a weight distribution hitch from you all. Part number EQ37041ET and a 6” drop shank part number EQ90-02-4340. The problem I’m having is that the drop isn’t enough. A 6” drop is perfect in a standard setup. I figured this shank was perfect since it says 6” drop w/ square. What did I do wrong and what do I need to get in the right ballpark for the ball? Looks like it’s about 1.5”-2” too high at the lowest setting. Using the spacer washers gets it closer but I’m not so sure that’s the right approach since it’s a short wheelbase vehicle. Wrangler JL unlimited. I think I’m done working on things today. Everything is coming with its share of problems. Thanks for all your help,

To determine the correct drop needed the safest way is to first get the trailer and truck on level ground and level the trailer. You'll measure from the ground up to the top of the inside of the trailer hitch receiver tube on the truck and from the ground to the bottom of the trailer. You'll subtract the trailer's height from the truck's height to get your drop. With you being off 1.5" to 2" adding in spacers really isn't going to be enough. Each hole in the shank is an inch difference whereas the spacers are typically about 1/8" so you'll need to drop an inch and add in roughly 4 spacers.
Most likely you'll need the Equal-i-zer Wt Distribution Shank # EQ90-02-4400, which has a 13" Rise and 9" Drop.
