Comparing Curt Trailer Hitches for a 2015 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen

Updated 06/15/2016 | Published 06/14/2016

Question:

I see all the QandAs recommend this hitch over the other one listed on your sight. What are the differences between the two. Also, if the hitch can handle a 200 pound tongue weight, why must I use a supporting strap when two bike and a bike rack dont weigh anymore than about 110 pounds max? I have a Kuat Sherpa it weights 32 pounds with a max load of 80 pounds, do you know if that would work with my car and this hitch?

We have been recommending Curt trailer hitch # C11411 for the 2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen TDI over the other Curt option, # C11422, because it is a little easier to install. Customer seem to agree with us because the review score for C11411 is higher.

The primary difference between these 2 hitches is how and where they install. To see the differences I have included links to the installation instructions for both hitches for you. Otherwise they have the same 200 pound tongue weight capacity and 2,000 pound gross trailer weight capacity.

For either hitch if you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch. The Kuat Sherpa bike racks, such as # SH12G, are compatible with the Curt Class I hitches for your Golf.

Like you said, Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch for any non-trailer load (such as a bike rack or cargo carrier) per their warranty requirements. Curt believes the strap should be used to reduce the stress on the hitch. They are the only hitch manufacturer that has this requirement.
