Will the face plate off of my 2012 Terrain GMC fit my 2016 Terrain ? They are putting original plate back on car for resale

The 2016 GMC Terrain will require a new base plate as there was a generation change between the 2012 and the 2016. You will have to use the part # RM-523184-5 that you referenced.
Since you probably have everything else to flat tow your vehicle aside from a wiring option I would recommend the Hopkins Custom fit harness part # HM56108 that will plug in line with the taillight assemblies of the vehicle.
